Greetings,

I noticed a Valvoline ad a short while ago. Here's the money quote, "Valvoline SynPower offers 4x better wear protection than Mobil 1". In the text of the ad they show a chart that shows after a 100 hour test, Mobil 1 had four times as much metal wear compared to Valvoline SynPower. Does anyone have some detail on this?

Best Wishes, Mark Shuell.

The search is your friend. I did one on Synpower and here are some of the results;

9 pages

2 pages on marketing

Same question on synpower

Another synpower thread

I only went back 2 months and above are a few in this area only. There are more discussions all around this board.

Take care, bill

The results are legitimate, but look at what the test is and what it's meant to replicate. Seq IVA. That is all you need to know.

Valvoline tried to get some synthetic oil market shares from Mobil. Even if this test means very little to how SynPower performs in actual engines, I would buy it again if it is on sale for less than $1/qt (with/without rebate).

It is a real engine test and a tough one. It's a low temp/low load test that is tough on cam lobes in taxi type service. It's a pass/fail test to meet GF-4. You must score less than 90 um of wear.

As compared to older, non-roller engines, what type of cam lobe wear is there on a modern engine?

Formulating often requires trade-offs. Mobil 1 does meet more stringent tests than Synpower.
