Valvoline NextGen possible low oil pressure

I drive a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 5.3L and switched to Valvoline NextGen 5W30 about 4 weeks ago. I have never had an issue with low oil pressure, and it usually ran around 40. Now, I've noticed that at idle it runs slightly below 20 and will rise when under throttle, but never reaches 40. Should I be concerned about this? And has anyone else had similar experiences?
 
That's really weird. Unless you have loose bearings and the previous oil you ran was 20w50 I don't see how the NextGen could cause such a huge oil pressure drop. I put NextGen in my F150 and did not notice any difference in oil pressure from other oils that I ran.
 
Am following this thread after I just recently used this oil in my sons PT Cruiser (as inherited from his Grandparents with only 20K miles !!) and plan do do so for the next 18 months or so (stockpile from a recent Walmart clearance purchase)

A quick google search on "NextGen oil pressure" had a few links to consumption related issues but no mention of pressure. Am going to track his car closely and will switch back to PYB

The 5.3 has a known oil pump issue where the relief valve sticks open and you suddenly end up with low pressure.

Why would you do that? The current fill of Valvoline has not caused any problems.

Fair question, I didnt finish my post properly. I should have stated that I would switch back to Pennzoil conventional if there was a pattern of consumption/pressure issues immediately after switching
 
Sounds like an oil filter 'problem', but more likely a gauge sensitive issue not related to the oil in any way.

Question it? Get a used oil analysis. $25, done.

You can't compress a fluid, so its not the oil. One brand of oil can't compress more than another. If you see a drop in pressure, you have a mechanical (parts-related) problem somewhere, rather than a hydraulic (fluid-related) problem, assuming you have enough oil in the pan.

If the problem happened at the exact same time as the oil change, then I would start with changing the oil filter. Its a cheap way to rule out one of the causes to your issue.

Yeah, my son got the Chevy S-10 with the real oil gauge and I tried to get him trade it to me for my Ranger. No deal. Smart kid.
 
Dont get me wrong, I have owned many Ford`s in the past. And it was the only car my Grandfather would buy. But my last Ford, (an 87 Escort) was such a pos, I have not driven/owned one since. And I had a 1986 Mercury Lynx I bought new in the Army, and aside from an air vane meter,and idle needing to be adjusted one time, I never had any trouble with it. And I put 60,000 miles on that car in two years! Commuting from here to Louisiana mostly. Oh, and I used GTX/Pennxoil Yellow Bottle in it.

That's not really true. It's not compressibility that matters, it's the viscosity. If for some reason the viscosity was less than it should be then you could get reduced pressure.

Like "zerosoma" said above however, in all the tests we've seen from places like PQIA the major bands (including valvoline) are always in spec for both additives and viscosity specs. It's only off brands like for example the two that zerosoma mentioned that sometimes have way off spec viscosity.

Yes, this I agree with.

The other thing is that the OP still hasn't told us what brand/viscosity oil he was using previously.

Disagree, this is the reason why moisture is an issue in a hydraulic brake system. Unlike brake fluid water is easily compressible

But it may not be accurate. I had a 05 Silverado it had a accurate pressure gauge to a point but it was not accurate enough for me diagnosis if one 5w30 was thicker vs another 5w30. If there seems to be readings this far off because of a oil change something is not right. But I digress this whole Nextgen campaign by Valvoline seems not to be going well every little difference perceived or not will be blamed on Nextgen because somehow it has to be because them different recycled oils can not be right.
 
One of my Jeep buddies (with a real gauge) also mentioned lower pressure with Nextgen, but I don't remember what he was using prior to that. Valvoline is generally thin for grade, could be the reason, as long as it's high enough to protect no problem.
