Valvoline Maxlife

1996 Toyota Corolla, 1.8, 206K miles
Just recently my son started using Valvoline MaxLife 10w40. He was using Super Tech High Mileage 10W40 prior, and having to add a qt. about every 1K miles. That was better than a qt. every 8-900 miles using conventional oil.
He usually checks his oil every other gas fill. After 1150 miles on his Valvoline MaxLife OCI he added a qt. of oil today. And, he said his engine seems to run quieter since using Valvoline MaxLife. I thought his engine always ran quiet before. C'mon, it's a Toyota, AKA- a sewing machine.

Seriously, any opinions on the Valvoline MaxLife making an engine run quieter?

Idk if it's in my head, but when I first got my saturn I remember it being pretty loud and clacky. After a while on valvoline maxlife it seemed to quiet down..

I've never seen a VOA for Valvoline MaxLife but perhaps it has some boron in it. It's 100% true that some oils run quieter than others.

It's also probably on the thicker side for ts grade, thus the quiet.

Are you referring to it being a 10W40 or its add pack?
He stepped up to Super Tech High Mileage 10W40 over 5W30 conventional and said nothing about it making his engine run quieter.

I have read stories here about certain name brand oils causing an engine to be more noisy over other name brand oils. (M1)

I was just referring to the possibility that the Valvoline MaxLife might be slightly thicker at temp than the Super Tech oil. Sometimes a slightly thicker oil will lessen the noise. But if the change from 5w30 didn't lessen the noise, it's gotta be something in the add pack. Likely Boron.

GG, you're the 2nd one to state that. I have also read a lot about Valvoline MaxLife. People that have used it think it was Heaven sent by Unicorns. And, I state that in a positive way.

In my racing/engine building days I would use Castrol GTX over many other oils. IMO, it "looks" like a thicker oil than most other oils.
I also used Kendall Nitro 70. That's a thick oil yeah.

Different engines can exhibit different "preferences" for no apparent reason. Maxlife produces some of the best used oil analysis in the Jeep 4.0 you'll find, but it runs really loud in mine so I don't use it.

It runs very nicely in a couple of our other cars though.

Better lubrication always = quiet. And being Maxlife 10W-40 to boot, I don't doubt it.

Made my 98 gm 350 quieter than everything, even up against PU. I personally was very impressed with the Valvoline MaxLife.

Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 made my '80 Firebird FORMULA V8 run quieter that other oils. DEFY took that quiet to another level, in a good/bad way. I don't want this engine that quiet

When looking at the msds for Defy, it looks like it is actually a full synthetic but not labels as one...

That information must be a misprint. If not, it's a darn good deal for synthetic High Mileage oil.

That information must be a misprint. If not, it's a darn good deal for synthetic High Mileage oil.


Heres a link to the msds, it just says synthetic base oil with the highly refined mineral oil present as additive diluent. My guess is its labeled as a blend but is mostly full synthetic. Just like how most dinos are a synblend.

I recently put some Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend 10w40 in my dads '99 Ford Escort. In general that car's engine is just noisy because it's a 4 banger, but to me, the Valvoline MaxLife did quiet it down, and made it easier to start in the winter.

I see you have some kendall, how are you liking it? I've been running the full synthetic kendall in my F150.

The 360 in my Dodge seems to run smooth and quiet with Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 in it. It sounds a whole lot better since I put a flowmaster 44 muffler on it.
