Would disagree with this to some extent. Will take just one issue.... ethanol. It has been shown, that the ILSAC-GF5 classification handles ethanol related issues BETTER than the straight dexos spec. Now this seems curious, in that GM really loves to push their flex fuel vehicles, yet their own spec does not handle ethanol as well as the GF-5 spec. This was borne out in the Valvoline paper.
So, then, that one fact, along with the other issues surrounding the dexos game, it is clear that this is really just a shake down, pure and simple. I will concede one thing in all of this.... it causes the consumer to stay focused that they are using quality oils. That part, I applaud. How they go about it with royalties and such, is not surprising, since they got their marching orders over the last few years from the Federal Government. And we all have learned, over the last several years and maybe decades...... if you want to play, you have to pay. That is the motto for the Feds, and got carried over to Government Motors. Doesn't really concern me. My 2013 Silverado will get whatever I want to put in it, and I will sleep just fine. As fine as I sleep when, at less than 1000 miles on the engine, I disabled the Automated Fuel Management thing that shuts down cylinders. I bought 8 cylinders, and I want them all to work, all of the time. And after seeing the stack of TSB's that GM has issued regarding AFM, I wanted it just plain not to work. And I have not one worry that there will be a warranty issue. The dealer doesn't make the call, and neither does GM. The Federal Trade Commission has recently reaffirmed guidelines on what OEM's can get away with, and it is in our favor. I may have many mental issues, but paranoia is not one of them.
