Valvoline All Climate looks the cleanest

Why is it that out of the major brands sold, Valvoline All Climate is consistantly the clearest oil? Never comes out of the bottle brown or tan looking like some of the others. Even Castrol has inconsistancies in color.
The stuff is so clean, you can barely see it on the stick after you've just poured it into the engine.

They don't spend much money on dye.

Different additive packs may cause different colors as well as different types/quantities of dyes. I wouldn't put too much concern in the out-of-the-bottle color. Heck, some oil comes out of the bottle green!

Considering dye is the most expensive component of motor oil per unit volume, what does that say about clear-looking Valvoline oil? What does it say about green GC?

I can guess, but I really don't know the answer... but one can infer any number of things!

Supertech full synthetic is also rather clear.

This may sound weird, but in my experience, Valvoline has a distinctive smell that is more pleasant than other oils. In addition ive noticed my car gives off a different, beit more pleasant odor in the form of exhaust when running valvoline. I'm guessing it has something to do with sulfur content or other ingrediants. However i'm also guessing odor is not a valid factor when rating an oil

Citgo's New Formulation of oil is very lighter then it used to be.

it may be just as light as Valvoline.

Valvoline Maxlife smells great! Can't say I've ever smelt All Climate though.

Only thing I can add, is that the additives in gear oil sure do stink. Maybe "sweeter-smelling" oils have less of these gear-protective additives? Just a WAG from someone that doesn't claim to know. Nor am I much of an oil sniffer

Gear oil stink is largely from sulfur. Should be very little of that in a motor oil because it can eat certain bearing materials (as I understand it). That is why you don't put gear oil in a transmission that specifys ATF, unless the gear oil is yellow metal safe. I think the sulfur is an extreme pressure additive to protect in the harsh environment of sliding gear teeth in the differential.
