Valvoline 5/40 Synpower?

Hi Everyone,
I havn't posted in a while, and I am still trying to learn a lot... I have a fairly basic question to ask, but I'm in need of reassurance.

I have an 01 Dodge Cummins, and I just recently switched to Valvoline 5w40 synthetic. My question is this: is it diesel approved? I'm pretty sure the diesel requirements are listed as CH, but I need to make sure. The oil says right on it "Exceeds all CH requirements" and basically "all manufactor's requirements including BMW, Volkswagen" etc. etc.

Does it have the proper soot control to use in my truck?? Thanks for any answers/advice offered!

The CH may be good enough for your truck, you'll need to consult your owner's manual for what the minimum spec the manufacturer requires.

CI-4 and now CI-4+ are commonplace in the Chevron Delo line as well as the Pennzoil LL product. It may be worth looking for an oil with a newer, more updated specification.

If you can find it, Chevron's 5w-40 Delo 400 synthetic and Valvoline's Premium Blue synthetic meets CI-4+. Mobil's Mobil 1 Truck and SUV formula meets the CI-4 spec.

Valvoline Synpower is not the best choice; it is designed for gasoline and light duty diesel engines in passenger cars.

Exactly Right!!

Let me tell you how happy I was to find THAT out.

I had to drain it. It is not CH-4 approved, and is the incorrect oil. For whatever reason, they have two versions of 5w40, and one is not CH rated.. So, I ended up draining 11 qts of the stuff out... Oh happy day.

I'm just running Delo right now, but plan on going to the premium blue extreme eventually.... But for now, I'm in this oil change for nearly $80 and not very happy.. Oh well, live and learn from mistakes.

Oh, and to clarify, the bottle says it meats CL requirements, not CH.. That was a mistake on my part. Should have looked at the stuff while typing.

Other than the fact it may not be the best in a Cummings Diesel anyone used it in their cars or gasoline engines.I happen to see it in PepBoys and got the last 5 qts. I wondered if anyone has used it and how it holds up compared to other 5w40 type oils. Will it proform as well as a Syntec 10/40, is it a good add package etc.

Premium Blue Extreme is on sale at our local NAPA, $16.99/gal IIRC.

I think if I were to use a oil in a diesel I would go to the Blue but if I had a VW gas or any other gas engine I would use the Synpower 5w40.I am not saying that Blue wouldn,t work it is formulated for diesel. I had hoped someone had tryed the Synpower and perhaps ran a oil report if not I will be the first cause I for one like Synpower and will take a chance on it.

i am currently using valvoline synpower 5w40 in a vw passat 2.8 v6 (nonturbo). i got it almost "free" about a year ago when valvoline had a $25 per case rebate deal. it meets the vw standards for the passat. next change i will be going to gc though.
