So I finally decided to check out the Valvoline guarentee on engines lasting 300k. Has anyone signed up? What I dont understand is do you really have to change all oil every 3000 miles? even synthetic?

Actually you can go to 4,000 miles. But, the 300,000 miles warranty is only IF you use synthetic.
Figure how much money it would cost to do 300,000 miles on 4,000 mile OCIs with synthetic. Knowing most engines will make it, it is a good deal for Valvoline.

Think of all the money you spend in oil and give to them. They then buy cheap insurance to cover any potential payouts. But with all the hoops you have to go thru they will count on people screwing up and then they don't have to pay.
If you go over too many times in mileage, forget to log the oil change online, lose your receipts, forget to keep up other maintenance on your vehicle etc......
Plus failures that could be traced to the oil itself would be extremely rare.

So why dont they let me go farther then 3000 miles with Synthetic?
I was planning on doing this only if I could use their synthetic oil for atleast 7k miles (after all thats why most get syntheic for). All of my family's cars that run on dino are too old for this program sigh...
I said it before and I will say it again... Use a quality conventional oil and change regularly at 5K miles with a quality filter, or Syn at 8K miles with a quality filter. Or go one step further and do a couple of used oil analysis with TAN/TBN's and see what the maximum safe mileage is and do a couple thousand miles less than that for a safe cusion.
Either of those options above, combined with investing all the money you saved in not changing it at 3K miles in a mild interest baring account or investment.
Then if your engine goes bust (which it most likely won't), you will have your own insurance policy of money to fix it. If it doesn't then you can laugh all the way to the bank.
Better than Ashland laughing their way to the bank with your money...

I liked how they capped the white bottle guaranty at 150,000 miles with the 3,000 mile changes. That tells me something about their vision of wear control reliability between their premium synthetic oils and their WB conventional.

No it tells you something about their marketing... Lets make the public think Synthetic is better by offering a better warranty. Why else would a consumer pay 3 times as much. Think about it.

Meanwhile cars are debts that create more debt and generally run fine on run of the mill Dino, but everyone thinks their situation is unique and so they prey on this psychology and sell Syn to that crowd.

If you read the fine print, you'll find that the guarantee doesn't even really cover anything. If your engine dies from overheating or something else not related to the oil, they won't cover it. If all the oil leaks out somehow and the engine siezes, it's not covered. If you never change the oil, it's not covered. And it doesn't cover normal wear and tear (worn rings, valve seals and guides, etc) Soo....what else is there? There is no other way an engine can possibly fail!
It's pretty genius really: Make a warranty that doesn't actually cover anything, and people think they're getting a really great insurance policy and buy tons of product. Kinda wish I'd thought of it.

Exactly my point as stated above... Invest into your own warranty insurance policy... YOUR BANK ACCOUNT! Then it's on your terms!

they also will only pay $5k or blue book on your car, whichever is less. gee, by the time you have 290k miles on your car, not only is it old, but it has 290k miles on it? what is the blue book value likely to be? pretty low, I bet - cause of course they will deduct value because of high miles.
also, the engine has to be dead. not just burning oil or making noise. oh, you forgot to change that PCV valve 2 years ago by the book? NOT COVERED! it's all brilliant marketing.

yep, they make $$$ selling you oil, then make $$$ knowing people get scared and sell their cars far before 300k.
StevieC, you make a good point on the bank account car warranty. I will actually start one of these. I never thought about it before.
Plus do you have any idea how few people keep their vehicles that long?The car industry would of died off long ago if the average consumer kept their vehicles that long as a general rule of thumb!I am going to guess they have never paid out a claim on their warranty. Quaker State used to have similar thing back before they where sold!
Anyone that thinks that they stand to gain anything from a program like that is sucker! Who is going to change their synthetic oil that often I am sure their is a month requirement as well as a mileage to stop people from doing a once a year 4000 mile oil change interval!
