this is at the +- 65k miles service on my 2AZ-FE. what is the "sensory method"? is it checking it without removing the valve cover? is it something only a toyota garage can do? is it critical to do?

i think the "sensory method" is just by listening whether it has unusual noise, if not then no adjustment is needed.
of course listening is without opening cover

May be listen for tick. The injectors canm be noisy too. Valve adjustment on this engine if needed is over 400 dollars since they are not adjustable and the cams have to come out and the tappets have to be shimed. I hope you're using a good oil. These engines are prone to cam wear from the weak oil(SM) available now. My cam was worn out at only 50K miles due to oil.

your car until it falls apart. Your 2AZ-FE engine doesn't need any adjustment.

What car were you driving ARCOgraphite? and what oil brand were you using?

the toyota genuine oil is generally SL. I also have 3x OC's of SL remaining. Otherwise just regular old Durablend SM ILSAC GF4. have used mobil 1 SM 10w30 for one OCI.

what would obvious signs of the valve clearances needing adjustment be? are they hydraulic lifters? i've read that hydraulic lifters don't need adjustment...

Ursae_Majoris,

There is a procedure how to adjust the valve clearance. There is also a procedure how to change the fuel filter. But both procedures are not needed. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I guess I'm screwed with 141k on my Corolla..

And all the million others using that [censored] SM oil..

Conventional at that!

He also has other cars that blew up due to using 20weight oil, even tho specified by the mfg. Bad luck this guy has...

We just lost our rav4 engine to the Toyota service centre putting 20wt in and I'm [censored]! WAS a wonderfull engine. only 50K miles. Read that TSB carefully, it doe NOT say you can back spec the oil weight on older models - you HAVE to use the 5w30 as the lightest grade if that is what is on the CAP and manual. Period. I would be leery on your 09. Lost a new KIA to 20wt back specing and our new Subaru has a rod knock, day-1 on 20wt. SO MY junkyard is littered with 20wt casulties,

Bill what is your opinion on toyota's "sensory method", is is necessary at 60 odd thousand miles, or, if i don't notice anything funny, don't bother with taking her in? ever changed the fueld filter on your corolla?

Listening to the motor is a good idea and I doubt the valves will ever need to be adjusted. Most of the time, they take the cover off, check the lash and it is within spec.

Fuel filter is in the tank and a non replaceable (ie "lifetime") so no, I have not.

I've got 141k and not done a thing with the valves. I'll take the cover off in the next year and check them out. No hurry.

Correct! I've said that since it came out. My 05 Corolla has seen only 5w30 and will stay that way.

They DID make changes to the 1ZZFE for MY2006.

Should still be in warranty I hope? (5 years / 60k miles)

Take care, Bill

Crinkles, I had a cold weather valve tap on my !echo! @ low temps (0C and lower) at about 100K; it was pronounced under slight load for about 5 minutes. I brought it to the dealer and they indicated the valve adjustment was the type that needed the cam removed and shims used. I let it alone and by the spring the tapping was gone and has never returned. I am using 20weight oil in an engine that is speced for 30 weight.

HTH.

ARCO, I highly doubt you lost that engine to API SM /ILSAC GF-4 oils. SM oils are not weak either. For GF-5 it looks like wear control specs are not changing. Only high temperature deposit control.
