I vac out the filter box and air filter on my vehicles at every OCI w/ a shop vac with the round brissle brush attachment.

Is this ok on the filter?

Id think this is smart to keep everything clean.

I vac out the box, and knock off the filter to get any loose dirt out.

Same here. I tap the filter on the driveway.

I've used compressed air to the box and it works well, just be very carefull, sand really flies. (Eye protection recommended) Same with spraying the filter with air. I usually just knock the filter against something though, I don't like the idea of widening any air passages or pushing any dirt through the filter, so I'd rather replace it if I knock it on the ground and the filter still looks dirty.

I generally don't like to mess with my filter unless it's to be replaced. Maybe I should start checking more often. However, I've never replaced one where I felt the engine would be at risk if I had kept on using the old filter. Maybe it depends on your driving conditions.

You can vac out the filter thats fine just dont use compressed air on it. The high pressure air will blow tiny holes in the filter causing dirt to pass through.

I use a bristle brush in the airbox, the driveway tap(I get lots of sand from the beach, I do at least two big shell runs a month) and then I vaccum the dirty side of the filter as well.. I use a damp rag to wipe down the filter to airbox mating surface. I do this every 3 months on my truckk mainly becasue of the sand and I want to inspect to be sure none is getting by the airbox.
On my road only cars I just run them for 15-25k miles or two year and get an OEM replacement.

The sand on the island and beach needs to be watched closely I don't want any of those boulders in my CC's
