DailyDriver,

First off, thank you for the well wishes! I'm gonna miss wrenching for quite awhile. Will have to devolve to video games in the hospital I suppose. ;-)

Thanks for input! 2 things on the clutch pack: RL's pdf on the heavy shockproof says it's ok for limited slip diffs.

Secondly, several 'stang brethren have used it for a few years with no problems.

I won't add friction modifier unless I get chatter.

Jim Allen has been kindly giving me guidance on patterns this afternoon. We've collaborated reaching a much better setup.

The diff could still make noise since it has 2 wear patterns on the gears now... headed for 3. But I am certain it will be better!

Many thanks to Jim for the assistance! 'k, now out there to kick the carrier out and clean out the marking compound...

(The rubber bushed control arms were lost by Fed-Ex but found/recovered/delivered today.)

We've covered some miles on the gear patterns. Here are the latest much better patterns thanks to help from Jim!

Pinion shim is .0275", L side shim is .2799", R side shim is .2651". Backlash is .009" - .010"

I'd let some red herrings lead me way off on pinion shim; was .007" (way) too high!

With 2 existing wear patterns on the gears, I was amazed that the pattern could be guided to be this good.

Thanks again, Jim!

'k, back to "La Garagienda" for cleaning and final asy.

Hey, Jim! This is one very quiet 8.8 now.

Thank you very much for your help!

Many describe Red Line Heavy Shockproof as looking like Pepto Bismol. It is opaque, but very bright red. I think it looks like arterial blood.

I read the back of the bottle. It says "...Shockproof is approved for all differential types including conventional, limited slip and locker...".

I sanded the Roush LCA's in 600#, polished them with Brasso metal polish, cleaned and painted the Roush insets on 4 sides with bright red paint - then clear coated the arms.

The arms include rubber bushings with Ford logos on them. Going from poly bushed arms to the rubber bushed Roush arms I installed today: 90% of the clicks, clacks and clunks at low power, low speed shifting and bumps are gone. It sounds like a passenger car once again instead of a lumber wagon with two broken springs.

It is great to have a quiet car once again. Now I can occasionally hear a hum or very mild drone from the aftermarket exhaust. Although, that is reduced with 3.73 gears compared to stock 3.55 gears.

I call my 'stang "The Shark". So the shark isn't a whiner any more!

ok, now I can focus on some other last minute details.

Later, y'all.

Following this version of the gear setup, after 2 heat cycles totaling 1 hour driving, some low speed tight turn diff clutch moan (chatter) set in with the RLHS gear oil.

I added 2 ounces of Ford XL-3 friction modifier and in another 1/2 hour drive, this eliminated the chatter.

Thank you! My instincts were sure off on this gear setup. Been retired too long, I think.

Maybe interesting story during your help with the final excellent patterns...

Was on creeper... reaching up from floor to workbench to get Sony old time camera. Butterfingers, but the camera fell to the concrete garage floor and split wide open. Was obvious some plastic tabs had broken.

I picked up the halves with hands yellow in gear marking compound and no small amount of gear oil... snapped the obviously damaged halves it back together. "click/crunch!"

I said to myself: "Thanks, Murphy. No way that camera will work again. But I pushed the power button anyway. The doggone thing turned on like nothing had happened. The final/success pattern pics were taken just after that mishap.

I'd bought this Sony a long time ago (2002?) because it would auto focus down to 3" and that's what I needed to sell a bunch of old time car parts in fleabay. Worked great for that.

However, the poor Sony having been busted up pretty badly in this recent saga, I think a replacement might finally be in order!

As I was sweeping the floor today, I saw quite a few fragments and pieces of silver plastic from the Sony on the floor. I think it is mortally wounded and just doesn't know it.

I'm not exactly thrilled with everything I've bought from Sony, but the above post should be an ad for them, no?

I was going to make a separate off topic thread but figured this isn't really worth that since things went fine, no drama.

Went ahead as scheduled and had hip replacement 4th week in July. Was home in a few days and recovery/rehab are progressing swiftly.

It'll be awhile before I can even consider doing any auto hobby high effort tinkering again but I should be back driving my 'stang in another few days.

fwiw,

Micke
