USPS tracking is awesome!

I don't believe it would affect the delivery, just the "tracking". Not sure that USPS uses the tracking for routing purposes.

Shippers don't make up numbers, they are created or indexed by USPS via a database, and assigned to each package. Your system has to be online/connected to the internet to create a shipment and receive a tracking #.

DHL didn't. I wasn't involved in that, I did maintenance/repairs on equipment but routing and tracking (for the customer) were seperate but on the same label. This was 10 years ago though. If an employee failed to scan a package anywhere the tracking would be broken but the package would still get where it was going unless someone put it on the wrong conveyor. Then it'd get there with a bit of delay.

Presumably that's what happened with the USPS package, they put it on the wrong conveyor belt and it headed to Puerto Rico.

I just saw this tracking info a few minutes ago, on May 17 at 23:00. Apparently the USPS is using time machines for transporting mail. I'm surprised my package wasn't delivered before it was sent or even before I placed the order.

Sign up for” Informed Delivery “
You will get a screenshot of your mail that is being delivered each day, that morning.

If you go into the post office to ship something, they are using pre-printed labels. It's theoretically possible that whomever they use to print these labels could screw up and print labels with duplicate tracking numbers.
They are not pre-printed, they are created from the info supplied from the customer. Do you think the "whomever they use" could print unique duplicate bar codes which would work? The scanning each step of the way is what moves packages. Once they are used, they become invalid for future use.

Yeah, it’s great! Especially when you discover that your package traveled 2,600 miles to arrive at your home 1,300 miles away.

I recently moved from a place where most people couldn't get home delivery so we had to trek to the PO to pick up mail and packages. There would always be a long line and it was so sad to hear the continuous stream of people tell the clerks that Informed Delivery said their package was there only to be informed that didn't mean anything in this post office and to come back in a few days or maybe next week, and maybe your package will be ready for pick up, but maybe not, and nothing could be done about it whether or not it was a needed prescription, etc. In the busy summer season you might not get the package for 10 days to two weeks after Informed Delivery reported its arrival! Similarly, an overnight delivery usually took about a week to arrive, if you were lucky. If were a lucky one with home delivery it was the same situation only you didn't have to wait in line at the PO to get the bad news. I now live in a good-sized city on the interstate, largest in the county, but they don't even offer Informed Delivery.

Between USPS and Fedex I could type until my fingers were bloody stumps and still not detail all their screwups.
Then theres the Amazon guy sitting in the middle of my front yard after he drove over a 2 high row of landscape blocks. The 2 marker sticks with blaze orange ribbons on them might have been a tip off, but then again maybe not.

It really seems to be area dependent, I've heard horror stories about each of the carriers. I will say without hesitation FedEx has been the worst by a large margin. Not so much their tracking or delivery times, but they have damaged the most packages, by a multiple of 10 compared to the others. USPS is slow, does funky things like send stuff to other countries and take 6 weeks for something to arrive from the neighboring state, but I usually receive it undamaged. UPS seems to be the most consistent, at least in my area.

Only thing worse is UPS. Wow. Leaving stuff just lying in the driveway. WTH???

Fedex put packages in the breezeway. And delivery has improved lately. USPS always brings stuff to the front porch, even mail if there is any mail. Neatly stacked.

UPS absolutely trashes every package they touch I mean THRASHES. Wow.

I paid extra for this............. no updates in 3 days.:).

Yes, they are pre-printed. USPS Label 400.
Nope, not any more. Bar codes - IMpb - rule.

See link:

Label 400, USPS Tracking, right, will no longer be used, but commercial customers will be offered Label 888 instead.
The Postal Service is eliminating 41 legacy service type codes, updating several forms and replacing one label that do not work with current Intelligent Mail package barcode (IMpb) requirements.

The changes will take effect Jan. 22.

Forty-one legacy service type codes that contain a two-digit product and service combination will be eliminated to support product simplification efforts, improve visibility and tracking, reduce fraud and encourage IMpb use.

Additionally, the organization will update the following labels and forms to be IMpb compliant:

PS Form 153, Signature Confirmation Receipt

PS Form 3800, Certified Mail Receipt

PS Form 3813, Insured Mail Receipt $500 and Under

PS Form 3813-P, Insured Mail Receipt Over $500

Label 400, USPS Tracking, will be replaced with an internal-only version called Label 888, USPS Tracking.

Label 888 will not be available for retail customers but will be available for commercial customers.

Post Offices should remove all Label 400s from retail lobbies, use Retail Systems Software to create barcodes for Label 400 customers and redirect commercial customers to their meter provider for Label 888.

Post Offices can order updated labels and forms through eBuy Plus.

Awaiting a shipment from New Jersey, I just tracked my package to a USPS facility in Carolina, Puerto Rico. (y)
Well, when post office is crying about staffing and they literally will hire anybody; I’d expect no less. One reason why I pay all my hillls etc in person.

Got my part for my pressure washer today via USPS. 4 days from Indiana and a day late….but I got it…and it was undamaged! I ordered a Vostock watch from Russia pre pandemic via Russian Post….still waiting on that one!

Pay everything you can online. I have it down to the point I write maybe 6 checks a year. My kids never use checks.
