I am thinking of putting a filter on the small overflow hose on my 1988 Escort that goes from the thermostat housing to the expansion reservoir.
The car has suffered neglect by previous owners and while i've gotten most of the rust out i have a very thin rust "sediment" that keeps accumulating in the bottom of the expansion bottle / tank / reservoir.
Would a regular fuel filter like the ones you use on carbureted engines work? the hose is about the same diameter....

Or would the plastic / filter not withstand the high temps?

( Not my engine ) but same idea

you effectively have a filter, its the expansion tank. You said the particles settle there. Secondly....why the obsession over a few particles floating around in your coolant. Your cooling system doesn't get affected by such particulate.

I think youre wasting your money for two reasons, I dont think the fuel filter will do anything of value plus it has the potential to clog quickly. I dont think you even need a filter at this point but if you have to install one a bypass system like suggested above is what you want.

I wouldn't do it either. I good coolant flush using a cleaner and regular changing of coolant should be enough.

+1 … coolant runs a long time these days … and not hard to freshen up when the time comes …
