Using filter for second OCI

Yep, the manual for my 77 Caprice stated to change the filter every other oil change.

Since I never use a filter for two oil changes, I can't offer an opinion.
There is little doubt that a higher end filter, like the D+, M1, K&N, RP, Puro Synthetic or even Fram's best is good for two OCIs.
I've never paid all that much for oil filters, even though I have used most of those I've mentioned above, so I see no reason to run them for more than one OCI.

Some automakers include oil capacities based on whether you are changing the oil only or oil and filter. My Ridgeline's owners manual, for instance, indicates an oil change with filter = 4.5 quarts. Without filter = 4.2 quarts.

Yes, I am in the same boat as you, but I guess I may have expressed an opinion. My car maintenance career began in 1980 which means I was indoctrinated to change the filter every time. Given how tiny the ones on my Accord and my current car are I was inclined to do so. But, perhaps the engines that use such small filters don't need anything larger. The important point is that if, at some future point, I am presented with evidence showing that I can use the filter for two or more OCI's I will do so. I believe in minimizing waste wherever possible. I have already proven to myself that I can keep a car in optimal running condition for longer than I actually wish to keep it. Therefore, my feeling is that if I do so I should try to minimize my impact. That could be an entire category by itself.

Well, I have no doubt that you could use a decent oil filter for two OCIs.
WRT minimizing impact, using a car at all presents such a huge impact that I don't think using a filter for two OCIs is more than a mere blip.
WRT keeping cars for a long bit, check my sig.
Ain't much young stuff there.

My recommendation is that you just change it every time you change the oil and put a new orange can filter on each time. Orange cans are $5 each at Walmart.

Not necessarily. Corolla with 1ZZ-FE engine has a small filter. Amsoil used to sell "premium synthetic" filters guaranteed to last 25,000 miles IIRC. Several engine problem later, they decided 5,000 is the max in that engine.

And you continue to say you're not biased?...
Puro Classic @ Walmart is ~$3.50.

Thanks for the input everyone. This is mainly for my girl's Civic since I got her some quality filters but am going to go with conventionals for 5K changes.

He's in Canada, no Puro's at Wally's there. Not that it'd make a difference in his case.

That's a drastic "step back". Guess the "in field" testing gave them the real picture on filter loading.

True ... I guess when orange cans are forced down your throat you have to use them - and justify it too.

I used a RP oil filter for 2 OCI but added Mo2 after the first OCI.
When I have 20000km on it, i remove and cutt it open.
I was supprise how clogged it was. I dont think the long interval was the problem but the Mo2 I used.
This was on my Sonata 2.4L.
No more Mo2 for me.

MOS2 is fantastic stuff. I'll never own an engine without that stuff in it ever again. And ceratec, like wow.
Liqui-moly is a great company. It seems like everything they make is of great quality

Or do what I do - buy oil and filters at separate places.

WM rolls their oil back quite nicely. I've never seen a special sufficiently deep on their Frams to make it worthwhile, particularly when I can get Wix, Bosch, or Hastings for less.

You can get Quaker State filters (Purolator Classics) at Canadian Tire for $5-7 bucks Canadian, cheaper on sale sometimes. Beats a FRAM and cheaper then the only retail shelf WIX filters I can find around here, which start at about $9.

When I first started using 10K OCI's in the 90's I used to change the filter at 5K and the oil/filter at 10K. I was not confident in a filter's capacity to last 10K miles at that point in time. I usually had to add about a half quart of oil after changing out the filter. At some point I just started getting "better" filters and leaving them on there for the full 10K. I doubt I would be willing to leave a filter on for 20K unless the manufacturer specifically stated that it would last that long.

Just change it every OCI and use a $5 orange can from Walmart.
