I found this chart interesting. Economy is in, luxury is out, everything else is - meh...

I think the chart really doesn't tell the whole story. For example-pickup trucks are in extremely tight supply. It could be people simply buying what is available. During this post pandemic, part shortages, etc. time we live in it's hard to makes sense of any sales numbers coming our of the automobile manufacturing sector.
 
With Covid and gas prices having skyrocketed, not really a surprise that economy was in and luxury commodities were lessened.

I sure do see a lot of upper end new vehicles in my area. Albeit a metro area where materialism is a religion.

With high gas prices it's no wonder compact cars are up. Not everyone wants or needs a gas guzzler and they cost more to buy. Sometimes it's all about lowering a payment if necessary. Sure, some pay cash too without borrowed money but everyone.
