Used oil - how do you dispose of it?

[quoteI see I now live in the most dangerous non-war town in the world...we had 18500 murders last year in a population of 45M.

I've heard interesting stories about Joburg. Mostly of the "don't come here" variety.

I recall having an old hotrod magazine that showed how to did a hole, fill it with gravel, insert a clay pipe into the gravel, and tip the oil down there as an environmentally friendly way of stopping oil ending up in the drains.

My Grandad used to use it to burn blackberries...the additives made the grass that grew there afterwards the greenest part of the paddock.

Our council tells us to screw the lid on tight, and drop it in landfill.

My boss burns blackberries with my oil.

Yes, they are required. They can be a bit of a A about it but it is the law. Google it and you should be able to find the law. Then you can cram the law down their throats.

In CA, the sellers of oil are required by law to take back your used oil.

You sure? Here in the Victor Valley Kragen will only accept 6 qts if you buy the container from them. My Jeep with the larger filter holds almost 7, the semi holds 12 gallons!

Pep Boys makes a big deal out of it. Fill out paper here, walk to the shop, be told they can't take it cause the drum is full or they are using it at the moment, walk back to remove your name from the list and see that the line to the service writers desk is out the door.

A-Zone will take 5 gallons but their tank is always full. They even put a sign on the front door.

Local lube places won't take it........I've tried.

Napa and CQ don't have a used oil container.

I've had pretty good luck with the solvent guy. He will usually take what he can fit in the drum. But he only comes once every 3 months.

So far I have about 75 gallons that I can't get rid of

Unfortunatly your experience may not be rare. Next time offer to call the EPA to report their inability to accept used motor oil. I bet their oil drum will be suddenly free for you to use.

Don't get me started about Mexico and their environmental practices. San Diego and the Feds are looking a billion dollar plant to clean up human waste that Tijuana dumps into a river that flows to our Ocean.

Hey, what is a little Hepatitis A among nations?

Geeeeeeeeeeeez.

When in California I regularly saw our bretheren from below the border dump their used oil into the storm drain alongside the street. Even saw a car parked a couple times atop the drain as the oil gurbled out. Rankled me but experience taught me to ignore it..... if they thought you were the one who reported them either your physical safety and/or car tires were at risk of retaliation.

One of a multitude of reasons California was abandoned and fled to the shanty on the blizzard-swept tornado-ridden plains of the great cultural backwater of Nebraska.

Here, I frequent the local privately-owned auto/truck repair facility that uses the ancient gas station that once serviced the autos of yore as they traveled upon the Lincoln Highway. It's HISTORIC!!!!!!! Nice bloke that owns the place. Frank's Repair. Stopped once for advice about replacing the Previa's alternator. He offered to stop by after he closed to give me a hand..... no charge!!!! Was able to do the task myself using his advice. Anyway..... Frank has a rather large metal tank for used oil outside the shop, accesible 24/7. All the dumpee asks is that the dumper closes the tanks cover afterwards to keep the rain and snow out.

By-the-way buckaroos...... one of the couple bricked sections remaining of the Lincoln Highway is just down the road from the shanty. It's HISTORIC!!!!!!!!! Despite attempts to use it to draw tourists and enrich the local coffers efforts have been nil. A couple years ago a tour bus packed with old codgers did appear to observe the bricked section and read the historical "monument" alongside the road. That event made the local weekly paper's headline. Great excitement hereabouts as visions of a horde of decrepit old codgers descending upon the burgh to "cruise the bricks" and spend money entered the greedy little heads of the local elite class.

No more tour busses reported since then. And, as the generation that recalls the Lincoln Highway is steadily planted in the ground, the prospect of future tourist-type folks dwindles.

Not sad in the shanty. Who needs hordes of humans hereabouts, anyway. The shanty is located on the non-brick section of the old Lincoln Highway. Do not want crowds. No!!!!

Scat!!!!!! Go away!!!!!! Leave us old coots ALONE!!!!!!!!!

I have a problem with your problem...especially with anyone asking that I must buy the container from them (You do have to use an approved container that it is for transporting oil, not approved by the store to be theirs).

I have a weekend home at Spring Valley Lake. Over the years I have had ZERO problems at either Kragens or Autozone accepting oil. Sure, after some weekends the bins maybe full..that's life..so you drive across the street to the next store. You have four on Bear Valley Road alone, two in Hesperia plus Victorville. Add in the other stores that take it...No reason at all not to be able to take in your used oil in Apple Valley.

It is picked up curb side on recycle day or I take to recycling at dump in Palo Alto, CA.

=========================

For those of you that said it was BURNT....this is BAD IDEA.

Used motor oil has Carcinogens which may cause cancer by altering cellular metabolism or damaging DNA directly in cells, which interferes with normal biological processes.

Also the people burning used oil should consider this a LIABILITY. I think this is worth a law suit or class action by workers.

I'm not on any high horse and I've done my share of bad dumping but improper disposal of used oil should not be allowed in any form.

I hope that you don't eat toast, and cut the crusts off bread.
