Most WalMarts will accept used oil for recyling. I don't have to bother since we have curbside pickup of used oil and oil filters in our county. They provide special jugs for the oil and plastic bags for the filters. Limit three gallons per every other week pickup.

I just remembered that when our waste oil is picked up at work they test for chlorinated solvents; if any are present, we have to pay for them to take the load. We switched to non-chlorinated cleaners.
I save my used oil up in a 5 gallon bucket, fills up pretty quickly as I change the oil in my truck, my brothers truck, my parents car and I also change oil for a friend or two in between. I used to bring it to Advance Auto but it got to where there container was always full and you have to put your name on the list and list the type of oil it is and whatnot. Since Oreilly opened a store around the corner from my house I bring it there, never any complaints or lists to fill out. I always make sure to buy something from them, I usually try to buy oil when I dump and they are happy and I am happy. Buying the oil from them is no problem, I will use it within the next month at the longest and I wally world is getting very limited on Motorcraft here lately.
I simply take it to Advance Auto or AutoZone where they collect used oil in a big container in the back of the store. Once at AutoZone I encountered a full container.
Sold 400 gallons last week to Safety Kleen. Mixed motor,atf,and gear. Mostly motor oil. 30 cents per gallon. I'll gladly accept any DIY'ers old oil.

Can't beat Walmart around here ... they'll even take back the container (whi I often want).
As mentioned in New York State it's very easy and convenient.

Every Advance Auto store I know of accepts used oil for free.
I use it to feed the ivy patch in the back..

I've got two steel 5gal cans I put used oil in. When one gets full I take it to the Advanced Auto store when I get around to it and use the other until then. I keep them under the work bench.
When I was younger I just poured it in the ditch next to our house. For a while there used to be small boxes full of fluff that you could drain it into and put in the trash (early 80's).

In my less environmentally conscious days (okay, I was just lazy and being stupid) I did once try and pour it down the kitchen sink.
My wife wasn't too happy with me for a while as it all backed up into the dishwasher.
I'm much more afraid of my wife than Al Gore!
