They're getting newer cars for the same money as something else 2-3 years older and is also cheaper to operate. I'd call that far from necessity.

Considering the insurance and registration costs I doubt you can say force, they are cheaper up front and cheaper to fuel in most areas but the TCO is still likely more than an old 50mpg Honda stick and it’s not like anyone is claiming everyone is being forced to drive 1988 Hondas
It's no secret Silicon Valley loves our EVs. I know people who are on their 3rd, but that's generally on leases. I am on my 2nd and love it. So the number of used Teslas and EVs in general is growing, and the newer ones continue to improve driving down used prices.
Who ever gets out 2018 Model 3 Mid Range is getting a pretty nice car. But the refreshed Model 3s are just plain better cars.

I’m at the low end, having bought a 2011 Leaf a few months back. Insurance is less than our 2010 Frontier cost and the operating costs are just ridiculously low. Level 1 is working very well for us.
This thing is fantastic for city driving. Not a road tripper but it’s doing the vast majority of our driving. It will pay for itself in under 2 years with the fuel savings and, even better, I sold my truck to my SIL and can borrow it if I need to move anything.

Meh, when a Bolt is cheaper to buy than a Corolla, with lower miles, lower cost per mile, and 6 years left on the battery warranty, why wouldn't you pick the Bolt?
I recently added a Trailblazer to my driveway in addition to my Bolt because I got a great deal on it and wanted something for picking up large items of FB marketplace, going to the snow, etc. Except for the satisfying sensation of turning a key and starting an engine vs pressing the power button in the Bolt and waiting two seconds for the "ready" emoji to show on the screen, the ICE driving experience is inferior to the EV driving experience in every way! Driving the ICE car feels archaic after a year of electric propulsion.
