US Border Patrol Ford Raptors?

Yes, another "necessary" perk for CBP supervisors in the war on terror. Special ordered trucks. I hope they can get all the power out of those engines going down a rock laden path through nowhere.

Don't worry about power. Those Raptors are a DOG.

Seriously, they are so [censored] heavy they can't get out of their own way. They may be great in a desert race but my old Jeep is faster on pavement!

Reminds me of "Baywatch" somehow.

Too bad they can't put a revolving door on that extended cab.

Raptors aren't Lightnings. They are not "fast" at the expense of being completely useless. They are meant to be much more rugged and better off-road. I'd say the choice makes sense.

I'd rather see them buy a deoptioned factory vehicle built for the purpose than take a low line stocker and modify the heck out of it to perform the task. Makes perfect sense to me.

Really?

When I was in the Army, our CUC-Vs (stripped down Chevrolet K-20s and Blazers powered by Detroit Diesels)did just fine in similar terrain.

Surely, the Arlington Assembly plant could build a similar Tahoe with a Duramax for significantly less than a Raptor. Probably build a decent hybrid Tahoe for less/the same and make the eco-people happier.

That's essentially what they did.

A raptor is NOT a de-optioned regular production truck.

It is a low volume, high profit off roader specially designed with extra long travel suspension, etc.

Very expensive. Both to buy and maintain. I think it's a traditional waste of the taxpayers money.

But it's built for the task, no?

What task?

Who's crossing the border in a vehicle that can outrun a Motorola?

If you've got enough money to have a wheeled offroad vehicle that can run away from a diesel Tahoe 4X4, you are probably not crossing the border in it. Just fly a Cessna or stuff your contraband inside something that is legally crossing at the border.

And doesn't the Border Patrol have AH-1 Cobras anyway?

It seems like the Raptor would be good for the morale of a few Border Patrol agents that got lucky and are assigned one but otherwise it's a waste of our tax dollars to do a job that any 4X4 would do.

Driving at speed on a variety of terrains, some of them quite rugged, without the vehicles breaking.

Would you argue that state troopers don't need reasonably powerful cars just because no one they're pursuing can outrun a radio signal?

I believe so. And if the improved off-road ability of the Raptor means they don't have to use those helicopters as much, I'd say that would be a good thing, wouldn't you?

It's not a waste of tax dollars. The money will be spent one way or another. Frankly, if the Raptors help the Border Patrol do their job more effectively, I'm all for it.

And a stripped down diesel Tahoe or Expedition (or F-250 or Silverado 2500) wouldn't do that?

Moot point, most of the time they are sitting still watching. A diesel would be far better for long idle times and the Duramax makes nearly 400 hp. It will work just fine.

I don't know.

Not as well. The whole point of the Raptor is to do that better than pretty much any stock truck.

....Huh?

You said the Raptor wasn't necessary because most people making illegal border crossings can't outrun a radio. I pointed out that state troopers apparently need reasonably powerful cars even though, technically speaking, NO ONE can outrun a radio. Thus, the point that you can't outrun a radio isn't an argument against having a fast vehicle. Can't imagine which part of that you are calling "moot" -- unless it's your own argument, in which case I agree.

Too bad the rest of the truck doesn't fit the job description. If it did, and if it were priced the same as the Raptor, I'm sure that's what the Border Patrol would have picked.

Will you be paying for their running costs, then? Because I'm not interested in having my tax money go to keeping a helicopter in the air in cases where a ground vehicle would have been just fine, and I'm sure quite a lot of taxpayers would agree.

Yes. In old K20 Chevrolets with sketchy 150 hp Detroit Diesels...

They did quite well.
