Does anyone know of a larger size oil filter to fit the 4cyl 2.4L SOHC (4g64) engine? I'm getting ready to change the oil and start the 1st A-Rx treatment and the standard filter is so small that I worry about it's capacity if the A-Rx does indeed find a lot of stuff to remove.

Is there an easy way to determine upsized filters for this or any vehicle application?

Thanks!!!

Mitsu uses 20mm threads like Nissan/Honda/Koreans/Subaru. Just do a search for brand PN's.

There is no easy way.

Baldwin has a longer filter for it. It xref's to the same Wix offering (51356)

You can get a half inch more filter ..FWIW

Out of Wix, Donaldson, and Baldwin ..only Baldwin offers a longer filter. Baldwin and Donaldson offer shorter versions. I didn't check Wix for a shorter one.

Gary, thanks for the info!

A half inch more is better than nothing, I guess. I just thought extra capacity would be better, particularly while running A-Rx, as the stock filter is very small.

So... to determine an upsized size filter for a given application, compare all sizes/specs and if they are the same (other than length) it can be used as an alternative filter. Correct?

Nope, trial and error. Thread size and similar bypass is what I look at. Everything else is by visual fitment.

Post the brand/PN that you use or can use and you'll find that there are even more oversizes available.

Here's a bigger filter that xref's from a Donaldson that is the same gasket size ..but the Wix is slightly bigger. In practice, it appears that this minor difference in gasket size doesn't prove to be a limiting factor. The main limiting factor is anxiety

Here's the Wix

If you desire to search for more, go here. and put M20 X 1.5 (tape and paste just like that) in the search window (up and to the right) and you'll get hundreds of filters ..must of them with much bigger gaskets. This appears to be the thread of choice for asian based engines of all sizes.

If it's a M20x1.5 thread then a filter for a Corvette ZR-1 will fit. It's HUGE, same OD as a PH8A.

BUT the o-ring/gasket is slightly larger than the other M20 filters out there, so check to make sure that won't cause a weak.

Fram numbering, smallest to biggest; 7317, 3593, 3950. The 3950 might not fit, but the 3593 will.

Purolator numbering; 14459, 24458

I think the ZR-1 filter is a (P)L14619.
The 24458's are getting tough to find, discontinued...

Here's an xref for the L14619 for size spec's as Wix states them ..and you're right 510 ..it's much bigger in diameter then other offerings. Gasket should work (probably) too.

The applications didn't list the ZR-1 ..but the thread is correct

yeah, it's a big'ol'filter. Another mazda guy pointed me towards them.
The gasket ID is about as big as the gasket OD on a normal "japanese" filter, it's not much bigger.

What's weird is our '91 Cherokee uses a 3/4" filter. I use a FL-1A for that.

I forget what years had the M20 thread. There's a part number for the conversion stud somewhere in the archives. Assuming that you have a nipple and not a cast aluminum filter stud (usually cast into a larger assembly) many can convert to 3/4-16 thread filters ..which appears to have the most options for alternative filter choices

Thanks for all the help. A local oil distributor carries Baldwin and confirmed the B1431 filter will work for my application.

I also got a bead on an oil they carry that looks pretty good and at a reasonable price (Duragard Diamond Plate). I'm going to get some for my next OCI and send a sample for a VOA.

Again, thanks!

That's exactly the same filter I've been running on my Hyundai's 2.7L V6 for the last two oil change intervals. The WIX equivalent is the 51626, and filters using the Fram identifier would be 3985.
