Last night I changed the oil on my 2004 Toyota Sequoia. It had 6,092 miles on the 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum and was essentially the first OCI since it was purchased. An oil sample was sent to Blackstone today. In addition to the standard used oil analysis and TBN check, I kept a sample in a quart jar and put a "finger blot" on a white sheet of paper so that I can keep picture result of the oils appearance. I was amazed at how "clean" the oil appeared on the dip stick compared to the way it looks in the jar. I'm letting the blot dry before I take any pictures. I'm planning to repeat this process for another two OCIs with German Castrol, one at 7,500 miles and then 10,000 miles. The visual data may prove to be worthless, but it's free.

If I see a drop in MPG with the German Castrol, I may consider going with Mobil 1 Extended Performance on the next OCI based on a used oil analysis that was recently posted on an identical unit.

Any thoughts on my plan?

Sounds good to me. I just changed the oil in my 03 GMC 5.3 with 8100 miles on the oil. I took a sample but I have not sent it off yet. I want to send it for Terry Dyson so I am holding onto it and saving the money for the analysis. I like the idea of your blotches. I wish I would have done something like that. Just for comparisons of the oils and time frames.

Blackdiamond I take it you like to ski!!! My knees will not take it anymore but I loved it when they would and black diamond's on up was the only way to go!!!LOL

I would highly highly recomend you give Mobil 1 0W40 a try. It has excellent TBN retension and even though it shears to a 0W30 in about 1500 miles of use it produces excellent UOA on Toyota's!It also gives great fuel economy!
