I have a Pontiac Sunfire 2004 2.2L Ecotec Dohc. I have a K&N Air filter and use STP oil filters. Planning on doing Extended OCIs so I sent in a short sample to Blackstone to make sure nothing was wrong with my car (FIRST UOA). Thats why there is only 1,771 miles on it.

Mi on Oil: 1,771
Mi on Unit: 32,146
() = Universal Average

Aluminum: 1 (3)
Chromium: 0 (0)
Iron : 2 (21)
Copper : 0 (2)
Lead : 0 (1)
Tin : 0 (1)
Molybdenum: 11 (45)
Nickel : 0 (0)
Maganese: 0 (1)
Silver : 0 (0)
Titanium: 0 (0)
Potassium: 0 (1)
Boron : 13 (17)
Silicon : 4 (6)
Sodium : 3 (5)
Calcium : 1861 (2159)
Magnesium: 453 (160)
Phosphorus: 823 (754)
Zinc : 955 (843)
Barium : 0

TBN: 9.8

Blackstone said everything looked good but that the oil looked like it had 4,000 miles on it and to try a 6,000 OCI before doing 10,000 OCI. I am currently 1k on my new fill of GC Gold and will do a UOA at 6k. Should I change the filter at 3k or keep it in?

Thanks for any input!

Nice, no problems I see. These ecotec engines seem to give to give pretty good results/

I personally like to limit the filter to not much over 6 or 7K miles. Really no need to change filters. Yea you are more than good for 6K miles. You could easily go furtheer without feeling one bit guilty. And while some would argue you can go 10K without filter change I like to change at 5 or 6K miles.

No need to change the filter.
Just about any oil filter would easily go 10K and beyond.
I would get a filter of a better quality though:
Motorcraft, Wix, Napa Gold, or Purolator Pure One.
In California, in an engine of a newer disign GC should be good for 10-15K miles or 12-14 months, whichever comes first.

OK - will leave the filter on. I'll get a Nappa after my STP and Fram stock run out.

I'll try to see if I can let myself to go to 10k miles. As you can see from the UOA I have a hard time not changing my oil

Probably will do a UOA at 6k then 10k after that just to sleep at night.

I quote from the comments section: "Paul: Universal averages show typical wear metals for an oil from this type of engine after about 4,634 miles run on the oil. Your oil was only in use for 1,771 miles, and we found all wear below average levels and in the correct balance to show normal mechanical parts inside."

Earlier I guess I mistook that for them saying that my oil looked like it had 4,634 miles on it. I believe now that they mean to say that the Universal Averages come from people who have about 4,634 miles on their oil.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Silicon is high for low miles. Is there dust on the engine side of your K&N filter? Your next longer OCI will give a better reading on your intake over OEM.

One thing for sure - I'm uncomfortable about using a K&N after reading what everyone here has to say about it. But then again, I don't feel good throwing a $39.99 filter away with a $9.99 cleaning kit.

I'll leave the K&N in for this 6-10k OCI of GC Gold. Tonight I'll take the air filter out and check for dust on the engine side of the air filter and report back.

*** I have an STP and a FRAM Extended Guard (oiled?) in stock. Which should I use next?

Keep using the K&N until 6-10k OIC and UOA shows how its working. Your SI's ok or average. If that filter is a good fit in the airbox you'll be fine for 30K.

I'd check if the STP filter fits since that box is open. I don't think you can open the shrink wrapped fram to test fit it. There's another thread running on fit and your model airboxes as being harder than usual.

You might need to join some of the stash recovery groups before you have 400k's worth of GC and filters.

Silicon is not high at all, a lot of oils have more than that in their virgin state. Remember that some of the silicon in UOAs is the antifoaming agent they put in the oil.
