I hear lots of UOA on engine oil, but how about trans fluid? I have a friend with about 30k miles and 2 years on Amsoil Mercon transmission fluid.

It still looks good, cherry red, I am stuck on whether to replace or do a UOA on it?

I also have 3 yrs and about 18k miles on my car and am torn between flushing mine or doing a UOA on it. It still looks visually good.

I value your opinions, thanks.

I too just changed the fluid out of my wifes car with only 10000 miles. You wouldn't believe how dirty looking at 10000 it was.I put in the Amsoil ATF and I drove it in Miami traffic yesterday smooth as can be.I just feel I can go 50000 mi. safely. The stuff they put in must not be that good because the dealer adds additives to the fluid when they change it.I don't sell Amsoil but the testing sells me its as good as NEO but not 10.95 a qt. Good luck on your choice. dropitby

Here is my $.02 on it. Even though good synthetic ATF fluids like Amsoil and Redline to name but two can easily excced the factory recomended OCI it is not a good idea. When you look at how seldom you change the fluid it is just good policy to follow a 30,000 maximum rule. The weakest link in a powertrain is the automatic transmission. If it should fail you are generaly looking $1500 for a domestic trans, $500-$750 core charge and $200-$600 to install it. If it is an import then you should add abour $800 more to that figure above.

Even if the fluid is still good the filters could be loadeing up with debrigh. If your does not have a serviceable filter do you really want that debrigh floating around in that trans any longer then needed.

I oten run into power train issues at work because I am in the auto industry. Most of the people I come in contact with that have had a trans fail at 70,000-80,000 miles witch is a vast majortity of them are the ones that have never serviced their transmissions because the owners manual says it does not need changeing until 100,000 miles!

I can't believe that nobody on this board has done a UOA on Amsoil trans fluid!

Anyone?

I normally like to change out fluids at fairly short intervals, but I was just wondering if anyone has run it out a bit.

I did a UOA on the AMSOIL ATF in my Dodge van. Van had about 200K on it, ATF only had about 140K.
Report showed high copper---something like 2 pppm above what they considered normal, but that didn't consider the fact that it had been in about 10 times longer than "normal". Everything else was within acceptable parameters.

Reason for analysis was curiosity, to see how well the fluid had held up over the years. Van at that point had severe rust, and was donated for parts. This was about 8 years ago, and the ATF has been improved since then.

After saying all that wouldn't you agree the best upgrade for any transmission would be to put a better filter on it? I know a person with over 100,000 on a Ford Powerstoke with a by-pass filter and it's still good.

Just a thought.

Another option to the bypass filter is the in-line Magnafine filter. Very easy to install.
Read more about it here:

To my knowledge, Amsoil only makes a Universal ATF.

You can compare your UOA with the ATF's listd in the "Virgin Oil Analysis" threads. Check out the Synthetic ATF VOA results.

Also, a search should yield at least three UOA's on ATF's.

Yes I am going to install an external trans filt ASP. I have a 3.5 inch Racor I am going to use.

I have not made a decision on doing a UOA on the transmission fluid yet, still thinkin on it.......

DarkDan,

You're absolutley right. I had forgotten about the PowerShift 10, 30 and 50 weights, the SuperShift Racing ATF, and the TorqueDrive for Allison's.
