this is a 92 civic vx. the oil was in use about four months. 80% highway. i red line this puppy and she seems to love it, but most of the time i take it easy on her. climate was summer in maine so hot and humid. wix air cleaner. new v-tec spool valve

What year Honda...and what is the mileage? Assuming that the oil is conventional? Why 10w40?

Reason for three filters? I'm assuming the engine has sludge.

is that not necessary, seems like the thing to do. [censored] it can't hurt

from my research 10w-40 in summer is the right move and no sludge allowed in my engines

ok, what oil you use in winter?

You have lots to learn and I hope that BITOGers will show you the way.

Those oil filters can last for TWO OCIs, not 1/3 of one! Read your Honda owners manual, and it will spec changing the filter every other oil change.
Run a straight 5w30, no additives for two OCIs and sample the second one. I'd wager better wear #s.

Wanted to say welcome fellow VX owner. :3 Nice first report.

Do not use x-40 in this engine. 0w-30 all the way or 5w-30. One oil filter for that OCI length is all that is needed, too.

thanks man! i dont know about the 10-40 though. i know there is the mental factor but it seems to work well for me. im going to show you guys up next UOA. why is it bad to run 40?

It's not bad, just unnecessary. You're adding extra friction and parasitic drag which might reduce your fuel economy a fraction of a percent. If this is a high mileage motor, I wouldn't sweat using a 40 weight oil. Lots of folks shy away from 40 weights because Honda was one of the xw-20 pioneers, and most think thinner is better.

Also it won't do squat to the VTEC solenoids, it's a great sounding theory since they are hydraulically activated, but in practice it's all in people's heads. These same engines work all over the world running everything from 5w-20 in North America to 20w-50 in some parts overseas.

^ This

The three filter changes are adding extra dry starts while pressure regulates. That's a bad thing.

One filter, 30 weight.

Yeah, the 40 is overkill. ESPECIALLY for up north where you are. Heck, you could probably use 0w-20 in the coldest of winter up there. However, that's sort of the point. A x-40 anything is if anything increasing cold startup wear in the winter there.

Outside of that? Increased fuel economy.

The vehicle's manual states 5w-30 recommended anyway and it pushes that. So, not like I'm saying 'go as thin as possible', if that were he case I wouldn't have recommended a 30 and instead initially a 20. I bring that up now because the point is you are using an overly thick oil that won't do anything but increase wear when in comes down to it.
