just a question, not political, and certainly not GHG related.

What are they doing to prepare, and who are they buying the power off, and factually, what sources of fuel will be used to overcome this forseeable glitch in renewable supply ?

Are any Californians taking matters into their own hands and stockpiling electricity ready for the event ?

remember, this post isn't political, nor has anything to do with GHG, or why Ca has put themselves in this position, while proclaiming the moral high ground. Please refrain from taking it there, and stick to facts and data about Ca, electricity supply, eclipse, and how it's being managed both state wide and on a personal level.

Should have really titled the thread...

"unplug appliances, and freeze in the dark"

Apologies.

Quote:
California’s top utility regulator has a solution to the near-instant loss of 5.6 gigawatts of solar power production during the next solar eclipse: unplug your appliances.

On Aug. 21, shading from the eclipse will begin to cross the state at 9:02 a.m. and reduce output at solar farms by as much as 64 percent, and then reverse at 10:22 a.m. and increase production rapidly until about noon, the California Public Utilities Commission said in a statement Thursday.

By cutting demand during the eclipse event, consumers will ease the strain on the grid and also avoid the need to start up natural gas turbines to meet demand, Michael Picker, the commission’s president, said in the statement. He’s asking customers to cut electricity use by 3.5 gigawatts from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. local time. One gigawatt is enough to power about 750,000 homes at once, according to California’s grid operator.

California has more than 10 gigawatts of solar power capacity connected to its utility grids and this is the first major eclipse since development of the resource began a decade ago. Reducing consumption will reduce the need to ramp up fossil-fuel generation, Picker said.

“We don’t have to rely on expensive and inefficient natural gas peaking plants,” Picker said.

As I've stated previously, to replace 1,000MW of thermal, you need 3-4,000MW of renewables, and the storage capacity to ride through the dark times on a 24 hour basis.

A couple of hours should be a cakewalk...

People are too selfish, too lazy and/or too stupid to unplug various appliances to temporarily reduce demand. Now, whether they should have to is another argument all together.

Can't they just tap into the Mr. Fusion on the back of Doc Brown's DeLorean?
Or harness a whole bunch of lightning strikes at 1.21 GW each???
Lightning must be striking SOMEWHERE almost continuously in CA since it's a big state, just put up a bunch of lightning rods and, voila!

This is all a communist Illuminati plot. Like every real American, I'm burning whale oil in an open pit in the backyard.

I burn cow dung in the back yard to generate steam to power my GE turbines connected to generators.

The HOA has complained about the high decibel sound of the turbines and the numerous trucks arriving daily bringing in cow dung.

And now I have coffee spray on my monitor - thanks a lot!

I found that baby seal pelts also make an excellent heat source. Condor feathers can be used to keep warm, and the meat is yummy!

Got a good supply form NY politicians or imported from DC?
Might be better to use a Sterling engine and just use the hot air

SoCal is not gonna freeze in Dec-Feb. either. That's a cakewalk.

I'll call my uncle near Santa Clarita and check out his plan; Maybe he might have to shut off the pool heater

OMG the pool water is only 77 degrees F!

You would think ac off for a couple hours should do it.

I might assume and hope most peoples lamp usage during the day is well under 50W per household and almost inconsequential. Turn 'em off anywho.

If you were a real 'Merican man, you'd burn the whole whale.

ALIVE.
