I needed a universal swivel joint recently and only have a non-impact type so I plan to buy one. I see two types/designs out there:

joint-1.webp
joint-2.webp

Does the 2nd type shown add an additional angle (in case they get shuffled, I mean the one showing the set of (3))? Seems to be the case. I'll bet you use lose "torque" with every change of direction too so while accessibility may be better, that's a trade-off.

I’ve got both styles. The second one pictured may give you more angles but it’s also weaker. I’ve broken several of those from a lot of brands just the way they are made is weaker. Often the pin or screw that connects them breaks or bends. I have had them warrantied but I much prefer the first style. I have a nice SK version of those and some from Harbor Freight as well. If getting for impact I highly advise the first style. I’ve nearly been knocked out by one of those others flying apart on an impact and it was impact rated. Also the second type doesn’t keep it’s place well and gets really annoying trying to keep moving it around.

I wouldn't use any in the second photo if you plan on using them with an impact gun for safety reasons. For the tiny amount of additional angle you might get from those in the second picture you trade off safety.

The first one is for use with an impact. I have some Snapon from when I was gainfully employed and they were really abused and took the abuse.

I can only mirror the other posters, never use the non impact type on even a small cordless impact, it can really put a world of hurt on you.
I have both but usually use the impact type even with hand tools, it is very rare I use the other.

The 2nd type isn't for impacts, Like Trav....I rarely use Universal Joint style Swivels unless I absolutely have to (Usually underdash stuff where an Impact Swivel is too fat or I can't get enough angle).

Impact Swivels can come off & hurt you as well if used on a friction ball extension, Either use a locking extension or secure the Swivel to the extension with some good (3M) electrical tape.
Impact extensions with friction rings are pretty safe if you replace worn friction rings as necessary, I only have 1/2 drive Impact Extensions & rely on my chrome 3/8" & 1/4" friction ball extensions for Impact duty when needed & taping the swivel on works well.
