Uneven pad wear when nothing is binding?

What causes this? The caliper pistons went back in nice and easy. They arent leaking, the slide pins are free and move easily. Only thing I can think of is the ears of the pads were getting hung up, but it's not like we have issues with rust down south. You can drive a vehicle for 30 years in southeast Texas

Ears that are too tight is not uncommon, even without rust. Some pads are poorly made.
Interesting. I didnt notice that. The outside pad kept popping off. The inner one staying on. It wasnt until I realized the rotor wasn't seated all the way before could get the caliper back on. I presume that was also the issue getting it off too. I usually take two lug nuts and put them back on to hold the rotor in place and I guess this time I didn't run them down all the way so half the battle was just getting the caliper back on and off. Although that's pretty much all the battle on a brake job 🤣

They should move easily in the groove, but you don't want it to be too loose either. Too lose and you can get a click when your wheels starts moving or stops moving.

Sometimes pistons stick intermittently. Usually you will see more brake dust on that wheel or it may be more hot than the others. As long as the slides and pads aren’t binding.

Atleast now I know why I never hear the squealers. You would think they could put more than one on the inside pad

My auto store chinesium pads had to have their ears trimmed, my USA made pads didn't. That's an anecdote.
Could you have overlubricated one of the pins and its playing pogo?

I had this on our CRV. Only 1 pad was worn uneven. Everything appeared fine. Must have bound up on something at some point. Put new pads, cleaned everything up and moved on. I'll know in a couple years or more if its fixed. It doesn't get many miles

Ive heard caliper pistons can get hung up when the pads are really worn and they're fully extended
