Yeah any straight deodorant is only a perfume and may work to mask the odor with another more pleasant one. Maybe. An anti-perspirant on the other hand will tend to reduce perspiration and typically has a heavy-metal component to kill bacteria. For most people you don't have to use an anti-perspirant every day to control odor, only frequently enough to keep the bacteria in check. I'm allergic to the anti-perspirants that use zirconium compounds so I have to find one that uses aluminum instead.
