That's a great article; but it begs the question: If you want to use Ubuntu with MATE, why not just use Linux Mint?
Exactly... Why? LM13 (Maya) could be the best Linux Distro to date! Have installed it plain vanilla. I need to back up my Laptop (LM9) and upgrade... actually will do a fresh install and then restore my files.

I don't think that every single element of Gnome2 has thus far been migrated to MATE. By "migrated" I mean "renamed"; as MATE is simply a re-branding, but otherwise a simple re-compiling of the Gnome2 source code. MATE, when fully transistioned, should be a carbon copy of Gnome2, but with different names for every app and library to facility co-existence with Gnome on the same system.
I'd also make sure that I tried it on a distro that makes an effort to integrate MATE, rather than compiling it on a distro that has not yet made an effort to include it. I think MATE was started by an Arch Linux user, but Mint seems to be the distro leading the way in integrating it and pushing it forward as a default.
I'd try it myself but for the fact that Gnome3's fallback mode is very, very close in appearance, function and performance to good ol' Gnome2!

I got sick of all of the Gnome changes.
I switched from Ubuntu to Xubuntu with XFCE and never looked back.
XFCE is clean and fast.
If it is good enough for Linus, it is good enough for me!

My only major complaint about Gnome 3 is that it has a crippled gnome-panel. If the panel worked like Gnome 2 I'd be happy with Gnome 3.
As much as I don't want the hassle of changing from Ubuntu to Mint, I'm thinking I just might have to do it to get a decent gnome-panel.

Alt + right-clicking will get you most of what you want out of the Gnome panel, using Gnome's fallback GUI.
Also, Debian Stable (Squeeze) still uses Gnome 2 and will be supported likely for another couple of years or so. CentOS and Scientific Linux are rock-solid and will be supported for several more years and both still use Gnome 2.
