Decided to check out Ubuntu after ClutchDisk's comments. Dwnld'd the .iso. Nero says it's too big to fit on CD. It's about 730MB? So I enabled 'over-burning' to about 93min. (It doesn't allow me to specify a MB amount, just min.) This burn failed, though I was able to read the disk under WXP. However, it failed to boot a Dell B130LT I wanted to try it out on.

So I tried again, reducing the min to 84. This disk also failed to boot. Nero wouldn't accept a DVD. So is this a CD-only .iso format? I didn't realize there was a difference, but I don't have much experience with .iso files.

So a CD is too small, a DVD is incompatible and I don't have a blank mem-stick on hand. Guess I'll have to pick one up or someone can explain how to get this file on a DVD if that's possible.
 
Did you download via torrent or HTTP? if you downaloded via HTTP (web browser) there's a possibility it may have corrupted during the download.
 
http; I can read the disk, just not able to boot from it. When Nero attempted to 'close' the CD, evidently there wasn't enough room.

I don't understand why it won't work with a blank DVD though? I see LiveCD, LiveDVD, and LiveCD/DVD references.

I didn't have any issue with Linux Mint...I dwnld'd the .iso, put in a blank DVD, burned successfully and it boots fine. No problems. So what's up with Ubuntu?
 
As stated above, I did try that. Nero spits the DVD disk out stating it's not compatible with the .iso type, leading me to believe this is a CD-iso image file, not a DVD-iso one. The one I dwnld'd is: ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso. 731MB.
 
What version of Nero?

When you load the ISO in Nero, there should be a drop-down to select CD or DVD. You want to choose DVD, THEN put in the DVD and burn to it.

I was sure to select "DVD" instead of "CD". However, when I select the .iso file, then click NEXT, the following window only lets me select "CD/CD-r". No other option available! I feed it a blank DVD and a minute later it says:
"Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make it compatible with the current disc....Disc required for the compilation: CD-r/rw. Disc type in the recorder: DVD".

It's like the iso I dwnld'd is tagged ONLY for CD's. [censored]. Again, I just did the same process with a LinuxMint iso a few months ago, burned a DVD, no worries at all.
 
Just use Linux Mint

Much, much, much, much, much more usable interface. And it doesn't slow your computer down to a snail.
 
OK...instead of selecting burn "disk image or saved project", I selected DVD, then create DATA disk. That preserved the DVD option and the burning is proceeding...OK finished burning...now verifying...OK so verification completed OK.

[censored] odd that.....Nero 6 thinks only disc images are CD? No option for DVD? Guess they left that out in the "express" OEM version. It shot out the door too fast to be included...or finished!

Well that didn't work either. It didn't unpack the .iso, just copied the ubuntu.~~~~.iso single file onto the DVD! That's just nuts.

For grins, I went through the same process, this time with the LinuxMint~~.iso file. Selected "DVD", burn "disk image", clicked next and the next page showed "DVD" in the destination drive box. CD isn't even available.

Yet when I do the same with the ubuntu.iso, only CD is avail in the destination box! WTH??? Go figure.

No wonder I had no issues with Mint. There's something odd about the way Nero is handling this file or it's been tagged a CD file by the creator.

No joy....

How about downloading IMGBURN?
 
A .iso image does not care about the actual optical disc being used; ie. there is no such animal, as far as I am aware, of a CD iso or DVD iso other than their intrinsic size.

That Nero is complaining about this seems a bit odd; but may be related to "crippleware" in an attempt to coerce you into buying their stuff. Once you finally get Ubuntu or Mint running you will not miss those weasel-y tactics!

I haven't used optical media to install Ubuntu or Mint for a while as they work really well from a USB stick.
 
Update:
Remembered I had InfraRecorder, so I used it instead of Nero 6 express....SUCCESS! Nero didn't mind the Mint iso but something about the ubundu one made it skid into the ditch.

I'm still waiting for the DVD drive to stop clicking on the old Dell B130. I'm not installing yet, just 'test driving' from the DVD. I wanted to see the differences between Ubuntu (with Unity?) and Mint. So far Mint was up in far less time, even with Cinnamon.

Unity is a bit of a fat, lumbering pig; albeit a pretty one. I am in the minority, it seems, in supporting Canonical's efforts to have one interface across devices.

Cinnamon is nice, too; but requires 3D-accelerated graphics to work properly. Older computers will scream fast with Mint's MATE version.

Alternatively, there is Mint's XFCE edition as well as Ubuntu's XFCE (Xubuntu). Both would be fairly light and quite fast but in their efforts to be light and fast may have default-installed software that is not mainstream or full-featured.

I have two Dell B130 LT's, both with Pentium M? 1.7GHz. One with only 500MB, the other with 2MB. Ubuntu crawled on the first....emphasis on crawled. Pulled the plug twice while attempting to scroll around as it was just unusable.

So I booted from the DVD on the 2nd machine with 2GB. Much more usable. Able to scroll around and see what was included. Didn't connect to the net. Noted the 'sidebar', explored the desktop? and found more SW & utilities there. Seems OK, but would need considerable time to evaluate further.

I booted Mint onto the 500MB machine for comparison...much faster to get to the desktop and mouse around than Ubuntu. It was actually usable. Took up about 135MB/480 according to the system monitor. Didn't go on-line with it.

So MATE is better still, eh? No problems with Cinnamon on either of these two old Dells. Ubuntu worked much better on 2G than 500MB. I was surprised how well Mint/Cinammon worked on so little RAM....impressive.
 
I found the opposite actually. Right now I have my laptop running Ubuntu and my Dell desktop running Mint MATE. I tried both Ubuntu and Mint MATE on the Dell (1GB of RAM) and Ubuntu was faster. Faster boot up time, and just faster overall.
