Continuing the line of stable and free desktop and server OSes.

Improvements include:

Policykit for fine grained control over applications
Updated Xorg for easier autoconfiguration of displays.
Basero CD/DVD buring app
Inkscape PDF editor
Wubi, application that lets you install Ubuntu as a windows app.
New Bitorrent client

No waiting for a service pack on this one or griping that the previous version is better....

Of course all of the mirrors are flowing along like molasses. 38KB/s. Looking forward to this upgrade - I hope they went for stability, consider it is a Long Term Support (LTS) release.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04. Carefully made 4 partitions on my shiny new 80GB Western Digital drive, reboot and POOF: Error 15: File not found. S#@#@^%^%@#$@!#$. No explanation how to fix, no nutin'.

I want to shill Linux. I want folks to have a viable Win alternative .. but WTH, these are show stopping problems. My setup is slightly unique, but not totally irregular.

Drive "C" (hda): 6.4GB Ubuntu 7.10
Drive "D" (hdb): 80GB Ubunu 8.04 with Fat32 partition
Drive "E" (hdc): 20GB Win XP

I swapped the cable on C and D, and it fixed the problem. But that was mostly a guess - otherwise it would have been a reinstall.

NJC, what partition did the boot loader have for Windows and for Ubuntu?

I found that adding a second drive to my system and installing either SuSE 10.3 or Fedora 8, neither found the correct partition to boot Vista properly. I had to boot back to the Linux du jour then edit the proper boot config file.

I just downloaded it (Actually both the 32 and 64 versions) @ 1764kb/s (so well under 10 mins)

Going to install it on a older machine first I have here.

Just to play around.

During the Ubuntu installation, there's an oblique Advanced button which specifies where to place the Grub bootloader. So I placed it on hd1,0 or hdb (2nd hard drive, first partition in Linux speak .. for those that care). But the Fat32 partition I have on hdb wasn't bootable, just shared files only. In fact, the installation DID properly add my hdc WinXP - that was the only one that would initially boot!

When I ran fdisk -l (under Ubuntu 7.10) it correctly showed bootable partitions at

hda1
hdb1
hdc1

Sabayon is another alternative, based on Gentoo. It has Compiz-Fusion (previously Beryl) enabled by default and is a very "eye candy" friendly distro.

IMHO, not as "polished" in terms of distro fit and finish as Ubuntu, but it's worth a try if you have a decent video card.

Best place to install GRUB is the MBR of the boot drive, as it's typically the easiest "out of the box" way of getting it to function correctly.

If Windows doesn't boot afterwards, it's very easy to just edit the conf file for grub to fix it from within, or playing around with it at the boot screen, figuring out which settings work, and then making note of them, and committing them to the conf file the next time you boot into Linux.
