What boat, what transmission.

The Dexron series is the primary offspring of Type A fluid. Actually, most everthing other than type F have type A in their family history. I don't know what would work best, but I remember in years past seeing Dexron bottles that indicated that it could be used where type A is specified.

Perhaps someone else have better detail of this.

As far as I know, the "Type A" designation is no longer current, so any fluid bearing that label is obsolete and/or crap. However a previos poster is correct, Type A was the original dedicated transmission fluid, and Dexron essentially replaced it. Without knowing specifics, I can't offer 100% accurate advice, but I would suspect that the latest version of Dexron would be an acceptable replacement.

A few+ years back I saw some Caltrans "Type A" ATF at a Union 76 station, wonder if they still make it... I remember the stuff as being a bit thicker than Dexron ATF and the additives in it tended to burn my skin.
