I have two LT1 motors, if you dont know what they are they are 5.7 ltr v8's, aka 350's, mainly used in the Corvettes, but were also used in 94-96 Cadillac Fleetwoods, Chevy Caprice and Buick Roadmaster. I have two Fleetwoods. One sits in the driveway with a dead transmission, I changed the oil and filter today with Delvac 15W40 and a cheap Purolator filter, it has 117k miles on it. I last changed the oil 2,700 miles ago or 9 months, with Mobil 1 5w30.
The next one is another lt1 with 177k miles. Right now it has dino Napa 10w40 oil, and a cheap Advance autoparts filter, with less then 50 miles, ive changed the oil/filter twice on this car in less then 55 miles, the car had been sitting on a farm, just to make me sleep better at nite. I bought a Pureone filter, and plan on filling it with Delvac 15W40. As soon as the car is registered and driven, I will change in 3 months and get an oil analysis to see how it is performing. I drive my cars hard and tend to idle quite a bit.
I also drive a Saturn SW2 with 1.9 dohc. I commute 28 miles a day to work, 80% highway, 20% city, and do encounter some stop and go on the interstate in the morning and in the city. I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 with a K&N filter. I will probably go about 8,000 miles on this oil, I drive the car hard, the engine does rev high, I idle at least 15 minutes a day, some times I idle during my lunch hour 30 minutes to run the a/c, when I get to my destination i will some times idle for 5-10 minutes till I get out to keep the a/c going. I wish I would have used 10w30, but maybe next time. I will be getting an oil analysis when I change the oil in the begginning of December. The oil has about 5k miles and is just beggining to darken up, I can still see the dipstick through the oil. I live in FL as well.
Feed back welcome. Is it bad to run thick oil in a DOHC high revving engine?
