TurboTax - where to buy

I'm a TaxACT fan, too. After being dismayed by the shenanigans that TurboTax has pulled in the past I switched last year. I buy the disc because I like to not depend on someone elses computer to store and handle my personal data.
TaxACT works as well as or better than TurboTax, for me. And unlike TaxCut, it is published by a company that is not noted for having sleazy dis-reputable business practices.

With Taxact your files are stored on your own computer. I do my taxes offline with no internet connection.

So Bob, you also buy the taxact CD? Don't you have to be online to do it without the CD?

Looks like a darn good way to go. If I didn't work for a CPA and have access to Prosystems professional tax software, I think I'd use taxact.

You can print or efile, I have used it for years as a free down load. I don't buy the extras so for 8 or 9 years its been free for me.

Hey Bob, you're right, it does print. I've also used TaxCut for years, but this is the first time they've sent me a FREE disc.

I just got my TurboTax from Costco yesterday - $20 with Costco's coupon.

On a related note - why doesn't the federal government come out with software for people to do their taxes? It would be in their best interest for people to accurately fill out their taxes. Why do they leave it for private companies to sell tax preparation software? I doubt the government has anything to gain by letting the private companies develop and sell this software.

Costco coupon -- every year. This year it's $22 for Fed and State. I love Turbotax. One year I tried TaxCut, and didn't like it at all.

I should have added that I don't buy the CD, I just use the download. I get an email from Taxact when it s ready for download, normally in Nov or Dec. Then before I file I do an update.

I agree, I have been using TaxAct for the last 8 or 9 years for free. They just charge you if you want to efile. I don't like the idea of my personal information on some company's server. I just print the forms and mail them in. Every year I check over all the numbers and I have never found a mistake.
