I was trying to do my taxes just now using Turbotax. I've been using it as long as I can remember, totally free of charge. I got to the final page saying in order to file I have to upgrade. Am I missing something or is it no longer "free" to use like it used to be?

They have a nickle and dime model and it gets worse each year. I switched to FreeTaxUSA.

Very first step after logging in was typing in my W2 info.

They always promise me a lower price and end up charging more. Tried H&R but they would have been even more. They lied. Life is not fair. Try to move on.

TurboTax ran me $200+ this year it's definitely gone up!! At least we have a whole year to come up with a cheaper alternative.

The tax forms have changed for 2018 -- they simplified the forms and taxes became much more complicated. So now TurboTax only allow very basic tax form to be filed free.

I used to do paper forms but the simplified taxes are just too complicated for that. So I used FreeTaxUSA to file electronically.

Next year hopefully I can do SALY

You missed it. You must have Schedule 3 Non Refundable Credits. Right? If so you are mad because they had you enter all your info and then pulled this surprise.

I would be too. Dump them. It's pure bait and switch unless they tell you beforehand.

You likely have a form that requires the paid version.

Be grateful - I used H&R Block's Free File. I spent two hours entering my info, and when I got to the end, it said I needed to upgrade. However, the "upgrade feature" wasn't available on the free file version I was using, so I had to do the ENTIRE RETURN OVER AGAIN.

Second year in a row this happened. Customer service was useless.

Never again with H&R Block. Disaster.

Yep! You're exactly right! That's exactly how it happened.

I don't understand why Turbotax says I'm a "Schedule 3"? I looked that up online and from what I read,Schedule 3 means you're a self employed tax payer. I'm not self employed,I work for a corporation.

I used freetaxusa then went to ohio.gov for my state taxes also free.

Block and turbo wanted to charge me because I had a $1000 winning lottery ticket.. which is on a W-2g

and entered like a W-2 but apparently they like to sock it to you.

More free and cheaper options every year. Eventually their nickel and diming for pretty basic taxes will cause people to move on from them..

But by then the upper management and executives will have moved on after "increasing profits" like they did a good job.. but it was only short term strategy.

Since Texas doesn't have a state tax, then mine should be completely free with freetaxusa?

Say what? That is whacked.

Not sure why TT showing schedule 3 filer if OP says he isn't. Looking at TT free, looks like AGI limit relatively low. Other free options listed here that should fill the bill. However if under the AGI limit, I'd likely choose https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free first. Available through the IRS website.
