While under doing my ATF job today, I saw this:

That first picture shows a hole in the corregated section of the downpipe.

The last photo shows a ring around the top of the correlated section that is mostly corroded away.

This is an OE MB exhaust system, likely all original. The down pipes do tend to get pinholes or leaks around 200k miles IME.

I doubt these parts are available, even from aftermarket makers. I assume these systems are stainless… every one of my cars besides my 293k mile 300sd that lived its life around NYC has a completely original exhaust.

What’s the best way to fix this? I assume they make a variety of weld in flex sections. But stainless?

Would some kind of wrap work for this, at least to add some tortuousity to it so more of the flow is preferred to go out the back?

Thanks!

The quick and dirty method that no one will know is there but will probably eat you up inside is to cut that piece out and clamp in a section of flex tubing from an auto parts store.

Otherwise, any competent exhaust shop should be able to sort you out.
