Trunk issues with both of my cars!

I'm still going to double down on the problem being the BCM because all of the Honda actuators I've replaced could only fail in a non-operational mode. Never seen any Honda actuator that I dissected that could short/fail in manner that would duplicate the symptoms experienced by the OP. On most/all Hondas, the trunk actuator is integrated into the latch lock assembly.

The skeptic in me thinks the Honda dealership cleaned up some corrosion and reinstalled the original BCM, but charged @Patman for a new BCM. That's one reason I insist on reclaiming the defective part(s) when work is done at a shop. Failure of a BCM is usually due to corrosion and/or capacitor leakage.

EDIT: There is an interesting discussion on the last post #87 in this Civic forum thread.
Like I keep saying the actuator!! And yes my Civic was cycling, it began to unlock but eventually I caught it cycling. I also agree with that bombshell.. wow charge for a BCM but never actually replace it! That's why there is a law in Michigan that they have to return old parts!

This is crazy but both of my cars (which haven’t cost me anything in repairs since I got them) are now both having problems with their trunks! The Civic’s trunk will just randomly open, it started off a few months ago just when it was parked and locked (which would then set off the alarm) and the problem went away for a long time until today when it started opening even when the car was moving! So the car is now at a Honda dealership in Niagara Falls and it looks like they might need it for a few days

The Corvette trunk issue started last week when I couldn’t get into the car at all via the electric door handles so I had to pop the trunk with the manual key that is inside the fob. But after I did that, the electric pull down for the hatch would pull it down and then immediately pop it open. Now it has gotten worse to the point where it just won’t close and latch at all 🤦‍♂️ I have an appointment to get that looked at next Wednesday at the Chevrolet dealer near my place.

Both of these fixes are probably going to be expensive, the Corvette more so. In both cases I’m going to get the dealers to also change the battery since both cars are on the OEM ones.

I’m going to predict right now that the Honda fix will be $1400 all in (parts, labor, tax). The Corvette I’m gonna guess $2000 all in. Yikes. 😬

The Honda dealer offered me a loaner for $60 a day which is a lot cheaper than what rental car places charge. It is a new CRV hybrid actually. I was happy with that because I have always wanted a chance to drive a hybrid for a few days to see what kind of MPG I can get out of it (although I would have preferred one of the smaller hybrid cars that get a lot better MPG than a heavier SUV)

Total bummer.

Dont feel so bad.

I had a defective doorhandle flatlining my Ridgeline for about 6 months before we actually figured it out and fixed it. It would just randomly be dead. Apparently the capacitive unlock module isnt really weatherproof and they will all ultimately leak creating phantom drain.

I'm glad you got it fixed but..what was the final guilty part causing all this on your Civic?
Looks like it was simply the trunk button assembly in the driver’s door. So the costly BCM replacement was not needed 🫤 It sucks but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I haven’t had to spend any money on repairs for this Honda since I bought it in March 2021 so I’m still way ahead here, especially considering it is getting closer to 200,000 miles now.

I’m still waiting on parts for the Corvette and hopefully those will arrive tomorrow or early Friday so that I can get the car back before this weekend.

Your situation truly shows what's wrong with the current dealership model (and in many ways what's wrong with today's society). Their incompetence resulted in you wasting $1175 or at least $580 for a part and repair you did not need. I hope they did not also charge you for fixing the door switch since that would have been a fraction of the wasted $1175.

I doubt that you will get any relief, but I would certainly file a complaint with Honda corporate and the regional representative about paying for THEIR mistake. I can't understand why owning up to your mistakes and holding people accountable for their actions are no longer core values for our country. Delay, deny, lie and profit seem to be the prevailing mantra for most politicians and business leaders.

Wishing you better luck with the Chevy dealership.

I’m not going to take this any further because there was no incompetence here, and frankly it’s not worth my time to fight it. They gave me a loaner vehicle for free and when they had the car the second time they didn’t charge me any labor for all the time they had the car apart. And there was no labor charge for the installation of the trunk button.

Things don’t always go perfectly when weird electrical issues happen and sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. I can’t expect the dealer to refund me hundreds of dollars and then lose money here. That’s not the way the car repair process goes.

Thanks for the details.. Oh I get it.. on the driver's door is the trunk release button. So that was somehow shorting out causing the trunk to open, make sense. And yes it does suck that you spent all that money when the dealer should've stepped up and admitted they messed up the initial diagnosis. Oh wait.. I just re-read your post, they did cover the labor for and extra diagnosis for the trunk button, good, at least there is that! I'm not going to yell at you about it, you're satisfied with the outcome.. I do hope the Chevy dealer is accurate and good in replacing the Corvette parts. I'm glad you got it corrected finally!!

Isn't it odd? Both of your cars ended up with trunk issues almost at the same time?? anyway be interesting to hear the updates.

Not sure that I can agree with you on this.
You could have fired the parts cannon at it yourself.
What you pay a dealer shop for is accurate diagnosis.
I cannot believe that this isn't a common enough problem with aging Civics that a dealership tech or service writer shouldn't have been aware of it.

I didn’t think it was a common issue although this morning I was driving behind another Civic which had its trunk open! 😳

I was surprised to get a phone call this afternoon telling me that the Corvette was ready! I honestly thought it might be Monday or Tuesday. The total bill was much lower than I expected. I thought it would be $2,000, including the new battery but it came out to $1,300 ($915 US). The battery was cheaper than I expected too, $258 ($181 US) and only $66 to install it (and it’s buried in the back of the hatch too) Hopefully this is the end of the trunk/hatch saga 🤔

So, you paid a deal a lot of $$$$ to throw parts at it... I hope you left a review to that effect on several websites.
