truck tonneau cover

Hi,

My S-10 ZR2 is used for off roading, and for hauling stuff. A lot of times we will use it as a weened vehicle, load up the back, put the bikes on the hitch, and go somewhere.

I currently have an older style extang tonneau cover - a snap-on style. It has been great, very tough, gives me a nice, usable bed area, and comes off easy enough.

Well, in its old age, it has been getting harder and harder to get on and off. One snap fell off, and really, Im getting tired of having to climb into the bed (its too much of a pain to have to unsnap the whole thing) to get something that slid all the way to the front of the bed while in transit.

So, Im thinking of eventually acquiring a new tonneau. Im thinking of getting one that either hinges up or folds in thirds. Im also thinking of getting one that does NOT snap on, but rather attaches into the rail.

So, tell me about what you have. What you like, what you dont like. How it is holding up after 5 or 10 years, and how it does in the winter. The extang has been great, though it is tough to snap in the winter, I just am tired of having to snap/unsnap all the time, since I do many more HD and hauling type of runs now, and often want to be able to easily access most/all of the bed.

Any insight would be great.

nobody has a tonneau cover on their truck??? There are LOTS of well-informed consumers on here, hopefully someone will shed their 2c.

Your reference to hinging and folding suggests you might be thinking of what many people refer to as a "lid", or hard tonneau. If so, that might not be the best thing for a truck that is off roaded, due to possible twisting of the bed.

All but 5 of the snaps on the rear of my extang are broken. For some reason they never break on the side. Can you get new snaps?

Im not looking at a hard tonneau, instead, they have soft vinyl ones that hinge in two spots, so tey can be folded.

As far as the snaps go, do you mean the male or female ends? Since the male end snaps slide on and off, I assume that exang will sell them. As for the top, if it breaks, and you previously registered for warranty, then if te tonneau is less than 10 years old, they may fix/replace it for free...

Have you considered a Roll-Top, or it's knock-off? Seems to have the advantages of each type, without the disadvantages. The worst part seems to be that you lose some bed space to the roll. Other than that, I have read that the finish dulls some over time.

Sportmasters produces a hinged soft tonneau cover. I have the regular cover they sell, lasted through eight Alaska winters so far.

Why not a hard, fiberglass one? I've had both: vinyl and hard. The downfall of the hard cover is: it's more difficult to remove when hauling large items. Otherwise, it's like having a sealed, locked trunk. I had a Guidon hard cover and loved it. I also hated replacing the Extang snaps all winter.

I thought about fiberglass long ago, but there is a weight difference, and it is just too unwieldy given the flexibility I need to move stuff.

My truck is more of a garage queen and off road vehicle than a HD hauling truck, but I use it to move my share of big stuff... I think the fiberglass would restrict me too much.
