I am finally thinking I should get a tonneau for my F250. But seems there are many things to consider. I have a BackRack. And trim covers over the bed rails.

I can get a roll-up tonneau cover or one that folds up in thirds.

And seems I need to get a different install kit for the BackRack.

And install the tonneau on the inside of the bed rails.

Suggestions on brands to consider or avoid?

Roll up or fold up?

I purchased a Truxedo roll up bed cover for my 2025 Ford Maverick. I also have a roll up cover on my F150 Ford. I paid quite a bit of money for the Truxedo and I wished I would have purchased the hard 3 section cover. I just don't like the flapping in the wind that the roll up covers have a tendency to incorporate. I lost a cover off my 2005 Ford F150 when coming back from ice fishing and it did stay on the vehicle however it could have broken my back window and I could have sustained extensive damage on the rear panels. Luckily it didn't hurt anything. Going hard cover after this. BTW the $150 cover from Amazon was great on the F150 and some of the less expensive ones are just as good as the higher priced options.

I have a roll and lock on my 2012 Ram. I really like it. It has an aluminum underside so its durable for snow load. Expensive but worth it I think.

In the 1990s I had a roll up on by K2500. It was really hard to install (after any removal). Seemed the cover shrunk when it cold, and the only way to get the cover on was to have the cover sit in the sunlight for an extended time, before the cover could be stretched enough to snap into place. At that time, I swore to never have a roll cover.

Maybe roll cover materials are better today (three decades later).

I assume the is still a channel along the bed rails? Isn't the roll up held down to the rail some how.

Yes, the rollup is held up on the front with double stick tape. The sides are held on by 3 aluminum C-clamps. The rear tailgate section is basically held on by the latches. My tonneau covers are fine however I prefer the hard plastic ones that do not flap in the wind. If you ever look at a truck with the soft top they kind of flap in the wind kind of like most soft top convertibles. You can see they are puffed up a little at highway speeds. The cover I put on my F-150 was on sale on Amazon for about $125.00 however the Maverick cover was $350.00. The less expensive cover is about as good as the cover that cost 3x the amount.

I can’t ever find the right thing.

Open beds are SO USEFUL

But you can’t secure anything in them.

Camper shell has been my goto until this truck. They are secure for tools and larger items.

I had a large tool box, and really liked that arrangement because lockable storage and open bed. But the current truck doesn’t have enough bed for a big box, and a camper shell would be too limiting.

This truck has a bed rack, which I’ve quite enjoyed … but it’s harder to secure things.

I get why pros go to vans.

I went with a WorkSport tonneau cover. The shop that sprayed the bedliner can install it less than I can buy it for. Says it's got heavier gauge aluminum folding panels than many similar and more expensive tonneau covers (which he also sells).

I read that I might get better mileage with a tonneau cover due to no wind currents hitting a closed tailgate. Not sure if reality or theory.

I can’t remember the brand because I sold the truck seven years ago. It was vinyl and it folded in thirds. It snapped on aluminum rails and kept the snow out of the bed. I never kept anything in the bed for long so I wasn’t worried about security. It looked good too.

I have had a backflip on the current truck since 2017. Works like new. Would recommend if you can fit the rails.

I've done a few mods on the truck and have C-channels on the rails for the kayak rack as well as some fork mounts to put bikes on top of the toneau when we go camping. This was all loaded up to head out to the Yukon/Alaska last August.

I went with a hard tonneau, folds into 3rds, and can fold upright against the bed to have an open truck. Amazon Toptiny flip up got on sale so it was about $150 off ($600), outside looks great, low profile. Took me and my 13 year old about 90 mins to install (from unboxing to finished).
