I have a work van that is pretty old and beat up. It's a 2001 GMC Savana 1/2 ton, and I have no idea how many miles are on it. When I got it the odometer read a little over 120,000, but then it stopped working. I don't know if the gauge cluster had been replaced before, but I replaced it with one where the odometer worked. I've driven it more than 50,000 miles since then.

Since I've had it, it's used about a quart in 1500 miles. Sometimes it takes 2000 miles to burn the first quart, I don't know why. I've used various 5w- and 10w-30 oils, including high mileage ones without much change. It doesn't leak oil.

For my end-of-summer OC, I put Quaker State 20w-50 in it. I figured that being thicker and having a super-low NOACK number, maybe consumption would be less. Nope. Mileage dropped a little, but not a lot. Oil pressure was about 5 psi higher when warm, 60 vs. 55 on the factory gauge at highway speeds. So when it was a quart low, I added a quart of Mobil 1 0w-30 I had laying around to thin it out a little. For the next quart, I added 5w30 Pennzoil. I didn't see any point in continuing to use 20w-50.

Now winter is here, and it will soon be dropping into the 40's and 50's at night, so this time, I used Mobil 1 10w-30 HM.

OH NO IT'S GOING TO HIT 40 DEGREES?!?!?!!?

I'm in the same boat. We might get 40s soon. I'm glad I have 0W20 to help with those cold starts.

Yeah I know..... I went outside last night & literally ran to my car & back. Brrrr. (Next time I'll grab a windbreaker.)

Hard to believe 50 weight oil didn't slow the leak.
I had an old car with bad seals and the thick oil did slow oil consumption.

Are you kidding me ?

I mean no disrespect but 40 to 50 deg F is not cold for motor oil.
You may feel cold but any 5w/10w oil is perfect to use. Even a 20w50
will be fine to use.

I visited my brother in Morris MN one winter... 40 is a tropical day. I think he is looking at -4 for a high and a low of only -26 by the end of the week. Not a bad December day. Now I am staying in the South...ish.

We don't have that bad of winters where I'm from in Southern Ontario
as far as temperature goes but I get a kick from the stories my
sister-in-law tells me when she visits her sister in Arizona. She always
goes at Christmas time. She will be outside in high 50 to mid 60 deg
weather in a short sleeve shirt or a light spring jacket and they think
she is nuts. She tells me that the people all wear heavy coats because
their freezing.

20w-50 was acceptable for use in my Audi down to 15 F. It wouldn't be my first choice, of course.

Hey, that is cold when you are used to 110+ temps in the summer. Still, I will take humid southern summers over that upper-plains winters any day. It is one thing to be cold but the plains winds is the icy dagger.

I still get odd looks when I take the MR2 out with the top down in winter if there is no salt down. Anything above...25ish is fine. Just a coat and a knit hat and enjoy it... maybe lean a bit closer to the heater.

Well 30s-40s at night for the lows. A typical winter day is 50s-60s.

Oh cool. That gives lots of options.

40 isn't considered cold in most parts and 5w30 is used in weather much colder than yours. I really doubt its giving you any problems.

Sure, but 40 is still not cold. Just because it is cold for your region doesn't mean the oil is not suitable. People have been using 5w30 for YEARS in areas where it gets really cold. Like well below zero. Just because you had to break out your windbreaker doesn't mean you need to switch to a lower viscosity oil.

My home town is not far from there at all, just down the highway a bit, lol.

If it hits 30-40 degrees here most people put away the coats for sweaters and bbq for the occasion....

Better make it 100% MMO, just to be safe.
