As you can see on the Pic-this door is faded because of the sun hitting it in the storage lot. It's a laminate of some sort. I was going to hit with a spray can-but is there a trick to get the paint to adhere

? It's a smooth surface.

If you're okay with gloss black, have a PPF shop wrap that piece in colored ppf. It should last 10 years and look much better than any rattle can job:
