travel medical insurance?

Tin Leg had very reasonable rates for a 2 week trip I took to SEA in 2024, medical and travel policies, everything was online, didn’t end up needing to use it, came recommended when I researched at the time.

It would depend on the destination. I have never purchased one and go a self insured. I have actually used health care abroad - cut my foot so ended up in the ED and got a few shots and stitches. Was free but it depends where you are.

I already posted in post #11
As a follow up we never purchased overseas health/travel insurance until a trip to Asia in 2024. The trip was for 14 days. What made me look into insurance was that I knew my Medicare Advantage plan covers me out of the country, it then made me question if my wife, who still works, company paid insurance covers her. To my surprise it doesnt and I suspect many company health plans do not.

In all my life, something I never thought of being older now, I think "what if"?
So for a very low cost, we bought travel insurance. Quite reasonable compared to the cost of the trip. It also covered all aspects of airline flights etc just in case. We were in the air or in an airport for close to 22 hours getting there.

What does your chronic ED have to do with your foot...weird dude 😆

You can get country specific insurance that will cover treatment and include transport to the US if recommended as necessary. My wifes friend retired back to Thailand and purchased expat insurance there even though she native Thai/US naturalized citizen. She had her gallbladder removed and all the Drs had done their med school and residencies in the US. The hospital is first rate and even does oncology and transplants. The insurance designed for expats covered it. Wife's BIL is US expat in Chiang Rai and he's had chemo for skin cancer there.
Choose your country carefully if you have ongoing medical issues and ask the embassy what facilities are recommended before you go. Uncle Sam isn't going to take care of you beyond recommending a hospital, clinic, or Dr. where you plan to go unless he' paying you to be there.
