My 2004.5 dodge cummins came with Dexron 2 in the transfer case. I'm not a big fan of light weight oils in gear boxes. I have been running gear oil in my transfer case in my 96 dodge cummins for over a 150000 miles with no ill effects. So I filled the 2004.5 transfer case with 75/140 #167 Schaeffer's. Im hoping the Schaeffer's will give me a quieter, better protected longer, lasting transfer case. whats your opinion ???? thanks, doug

140 not necessary, will lower your MPG and will not add to gear life. In fact in the COLD NE, it may be worse in the winter for wear.

I understand your concern with ATF. I would have gone with a light MT synthetic gear oil, tops.

I should also add that the truck will be running twin turbos (60 psi boost), DTT built transmission. So rest of the drivetrain will be needing all the help it can get. At 600 HP & 1000 ++ pounds of torque, The stress on transfer case & rear end gears & bearings will be very different than in a stock truck. doug

just an idea, can the Pennzoil synchromesh fluid that the NV 3500 & 5600 transmissions use could also be run in the tcase? it is a light gear oil (5w30).
anyone care to comment or has any proof that it will be better than atf.

Doug60[/b], like others here, I might go up in either weight or additives (ATFs are light on barrier anti-wear & EP) but I wouldn't have done both to any severe degree.

Going from ATF with a cSt of 7.5 to something like Pennzoil Synchromesh (cSt 9.5) or Red Line MTL (a cSt of 10.5 - 11.5).

My #1 pick would have been Specialty Formulations MTF Glide (same viscosity as ATF but much greater anti-wear & EP adds) or I would have taken the same formula and gone up slightly in weight to a cSt of 9.5 - Specialty Formulations Synchroglide.

Using an overly thick fluid may increase heat in the unit (because you are drastically increasing drag) and that can cause parts to wear prematurely, etc ...

The cold weather specs on the #167 are much better than the SYN 75/90 I was using on the 96 so I have no reservations about the #167. And the 96 5 speed still gets 19 to 20 MPG & can break the tires loose in a 4th gear roll on. Once your up to operating temps you can rely on the extra protection.

If the TC needs GL5 protection, then I would recommend our MTL-P, which is lower in vis than the 75W90, and would be better in cold weather.

With that much Hp, I think the TC would show more wear with ATF, since it has minmal EP adds.
