I need to change the transfer case fluid in my explorer and it calls for mercon, but the trans calls for mercon v. I'm trying to determine what I should put in it? Looking on the motorcraft site, they now sell transfer case fluid for old transfer cases that called for mercon.

I'd really like to just go up to advance auto and pick up some mercon v, but it doesn't look like ford puts mercon v in the tc.

The tc I have is the 4x4/awd kind.

Help me out guys. Thanks.

You do use the XL-12 fluid?

Do you know if it would be ok to use something like m1 atf thats good for mercon/mercon v?

I'd use the xl-12 but the dealer is 15mi each way, it's not the cost issue. Thanks

The trans fluid can make the clutch plate in the trsnsfer case to come apart, it affects the glue bonding the fiber to the steel. The older trans fluid didnt do this, so they came out with a dedicated fluid for the transfer case.
