What's the best synthetic Trans.fluid to use for an 04 Mazda6 5sp.auto? I have 7k miles on the car,and would like to do a drain and fill soon.

Redline D4. Or any synthetic which specifies Mercon V compliance.

Do note that the 5spd jatco has serious overheating problems and desperately needs a auxilary transmission cooler installed. Recently owners with ATF temp gauges have been shocked in horror at some of the temps they've seen.

In 40F ambient, the transmission reached over 210F. Things are going to be blowing left and right past the warranty period without a cooler.

Here's an easy how-to install guide for adding a cooler!

Oops, sorry, overlooked that one. Got my 4s, 5s, and 6s mixed up. What does your owner's manual call out?

How about the 4-spd auto in the Mazda 6i 4-cyl? Is it more reliable compared to the old 5-spd auto in the 6s? My GF really wants a 6i and I've been researching...

And now I will drive a 2005 6s with a 6-spd auto for 1 week as a rental because I wrecked my WRX and it's currently in a shop...

Can I use Redline HI-Temp Syn.formula for now until I get the cooler in the near future? I have 7,100 miles on the car and will be doing the drain and fill method. Will it help as far as keeping the Temp.down? Thanks.

Anything will help. The car just really needs that transmission cooler on there. Just use whatever fluid meets or exceeds mercon V specifications, unless its the 6spd ATX which requires Type-IV I believe.

If your driving a wagon, its unnecessary, as they already have an additional auxilary cooler.

You don't want to use the Redline hi-temp transmission fluid. It was a while ago but I recall a guy at Redline telling me that the hi-temp fluid wasn't recommended in a normally driven (or even weekend autocrossed) passenger vehicle. I'm pretty sure he said it was meant for race applications. Email Redline, tell them what you've got and what the manufacturer spec is for the transmission fluid and they'll tell you to use the D4.

FWIW...I had my 6i ATX transmission fluid completley exchanged with Redline D4 last summer. So far, so good. Tiny difference in the way it shifts..a touch quicker and seems to hold 2nd and 3rd gear a bit longer before upshifting (in auto mode). I don't know how just changing the fluid could have done that but it sure feels that way. Who knows, maybe it's a placebo effect?

Good luck!

Redline makes a racing formula also, but i saw a Redline Hi-Temp one and it stated it can be used in cars that are used for towing or hi temp areas. I live in FL and I thought this might help keep the temp down.

Sure, could be that too. That's why I said I didn't know if the fluid alone could make that change. Still, I did notice the change in shifts within a day or two of having the fluid change done. Who knows

. About the only thing I know with certainty is it hasn't killed my transmission.

Eric....I would email or call Redline. They were very helpful and willing to discuss it when I called.

Yea, that may be true but according to your friend, does that automatically mean they make inferior products? Why not have your friend come here and tell everyone the technical reasons why AMSOIL products are so bad.
