does a fluid drain and fill suffice for newer auto transmissions, or does the filter really need to be replaced? the car is a 2006 mazda w. 2.3l engine and 4 speed auto. thanks.

75000

did 2 drain and fills with the castrol import multi vehicle around 70,000 / 71,000

Some newer vehicles aren't even coming factory equipped with "filters" anymore.

The local dealer said my 06 MZ6 with the 3.0L and six speed auto only has a pick-up screen that doesn't need/ can't be replaced as part of a normal maintenance routine.

I'm exploring adding a magnefine or just leaving it w/ out one and drain and fill every 30-50k miles.

Check w/ dealer to see if your trans has a serviceable filter, and if so, I'd replace it.

Exactly. I'd suspect this Mazda's trans is a vertically split, pan-less trans case just like most these days. Even if it did have a big mesh replaceable filter, I don't see the value in changing it more than once in it's lifetime. Maybe at ~50Kmi and you're good.

Do you have the transmission drain plug like my Fusion does? I plan to change the filter every 80K and change the fluid every 30-40K.

Filter should be good for at least 100k.

Give it a couple more drain refills and keep driving. When you're over 100k, buy a filter kit.

yes, it has a plug. makes drain and refills super nice.

now im wondering if the new camry has one????? new post time.

The drain plug thing does make it great for draining the transmission pan. Also on the Focus I welded a boss inside the pan and drilled and tapped for a 1/2 inch drain plug. Seems like all transmission pans would have a drain plug.

The Aisin 6-speed in my niece's '06 Fusion doesn't have a serviceable transmission filter.

Roger that. The factory service manual for my Marauder even says that the filter does not require changing for routine service, only if the transmission is being repaired for a failure or contamination. Of course, being a card-carrying OCD member of BITOG I changed it at 30,000 miles anyway, but I've done fluid-only drain & fills since then.

This trans allegedly HAS A FILTER. Since no model was included I had to back track each and every 2.3 liter offering and finally found one that offered a 2006 model year (there were two - one was the pickup) and then found the filter that specified the 4 speed auto.
