My dad just bought a 16" flatbed trailer. The problem the lighting works but not the brakes. The trailer has a 6-pin connector (i'm guessing common on any utility trailer) the truck has the 7-pin rv connector. I bought a hoppy adapter wish I would of bought a whole new cord instead. There's 2 wires coming from the brakes a red (***?) and red/brown(neg.?). Up front the red/brown has a yellow wire spliced into it which is grounded to the trailer. So the actual connector only has 5 wires going to it. The brake controller does work on my rv. I seriously don't think the wiring is right on the trailer. Seeing that the Kubota tractor we bought it with wasn't put together correctly also my dad won't be surprised. Anyone shed some light? Eric

16ft oops. The brake lights work, the electric brakes don't. It's a dual axle but only has brakes on the back. I have a brake controller reads "." which I think means grounds, manuals always seem to disappear around me. The brake controller works on 5th wheel, so shouldn't be that. Hoping to use the trailer to pick up a parts car but may have to use a tow dolly instead, doesn't sound to fun with all the hills between here and there.

the lights on trailers are pretty simple. you're only running the hot wire from the light to the pin, and either the ground wire from the light (any light) is either grounded to the trailer frame by the light bracket or you take the ground wire coming out of the light and attach it nearby on the trailer frame.
The only other brake wires I'm familiar with is the reverse solenoid for surge brakes. When you back up, it activates the surge brakes. The surge brake wire, going through the 6-pin connector, picks up on the reverse lights, and that deactivates the surge brakes when backing up. If you have electric brakes, or some sort of brake controller, sorry I don't have experience with that.

just noticed you talk about a brake controller for the rv, so the rv is towed? For the trailer, you didn't mention it has brakes, I'm assuming for a 16 foot (single axle?) trailer it doesn't so then all you would be connecting are the wires for the lights, and isolating the brake wires except for surge brakes if applicable. hope that helps
Will send you a listing of the standard color codes I have on my 18' next week -- hope it is not too late. The trailer is 120 mi away, so it is not easy to help out until then. Did you buy the trailer new? If so, go back to dealer and see if he can determine what's wrong. All of my six wire trailers (horse and utility) have six-wire wiring, so I am not sure why you have five and a jumper (?).
If you don't want to go back to the dealer, call and talk to Austin Trailers on US 73/KS 7. They may be able to help you out. Have never had any work done there, but they sell/service quite a few trailers.
Who did you get your Kubota from? I may need to shop for a 20 hp with finish mower in a year or two.

Finally figured it out. They switched the elec. brake wire and ground wire and then they had the ground wire for the trailer to the correct elec. brake wire. So when I switched them on the connector thankfully no one was touching it. We got ours from Hartzlers in Nevada, MO. Dad wouldn't recommend them since the tractor and trailer both had problems. The tractor is the L300 with the loader.
Glad you got the problem fixed. Never dealt with Hartzler's, although we have enjoyed their Xmas tractor display on US 71 several times.
Coleman Equip on K-7 is a Kubota dealer. You may want to consider them for any service you may need. They have been in business for 20+ years and I haven't heard anything bad about them.
