Just completed a rear diff service on my 2005 trailblazer LS 4x4 3.42 gear, open rear. Found it kind of neat that the diff cover gasket is a heavy metal/rubber reusable gasket! The inside of the diff cover has the magnet. The cover bolts come out super hard thanks to some heavy pink thread locker compliments of American Axle. The cover drops right off once the bolts are removed. I wiped up all the surfaces I could with paper towels and used mineral spirits on the gunky diff cover and magnet. I never seized all the bolts and buttered up the gasket a bit with silicone grease to help it stick a bit for re-install. You can see the color of the old diff oil at 22Kmi compared to the new. All and all a very easy job, first take the spare tire down for more room!

Thanks. I used M1 75w-90 which is what GM specs. The inside of the cover was coated in black gunk & the magnet had a bunch of black metallic paste on it, that was about it. It all cleaned up easily with mineral spirits. It was a quick job thanks to that gasket.
