Hey guys, some of you may remember a guy wanting to trade me a 2009 RX8 R3 edition with 27k miles on it for my S2000. Well i traded. a link to a pic of the Mazda is below.

the car is immaculate, and its just and overall very nice car. value wise i had to trade. even a friend who is a used car dealer said i made a good trade. i will miss the S2000. but i love this RX8 R3. and its still under warranty.

im familiar with the needs of the rotary engine, topping off often and running it hard once per drive after its warm to keep the apex seals clean, ect.. i have formula shell 5w20 conventional in it right now. i will probably stick with 5w20 conventional, as mazda seems not to sway from their recommendation to not use synthetic. this is my first rotary engine. ive read a lot about them, and a friend had one for a while, but im no expert.

i do have one question for you RX8 owners. the 2009 has the upgraded oiling system with 3 oil injectors instead of 2 as the previous generation and is supposed to be better. is it still a good idea to premix on the newer models? ive heard conflicting reviews. some say premixing causes more carbon build-up and some say it reduces it. i know the 04-08's it was highly recommended as that engine only had 2 oil injectors to lube the apex seals. throw your opinions at me.

Seems like you got the better end of the deal. Without knowing all the details it makes me wonder about the unknowns on the RX8. What reason did he have to trade you a higher valued vehice?

i wondered that, but the car checks out good. clean carfax, the body all looks decent with no overspray/signs of wreckage(i grew up around and uncle with a body shop). it has about 10 very small hail pings in the roof/hood. but so did my honda. it runs excellent. as far i can tell. i drove it 230 miles yesterday without a flinch. car seems solid. and since its a 2009 it has a rotary core warranty of 8 years/100k miles.

the guy i traded had 3 build honda civics, he said hondas are his comfort zone and he has always wanted and S2000.

after checking the car over good and driving it i couldn't pass it up. after i traded i took it to a jiffy lube because it was almost due for and oil change anyway, it came with and extra correct mazda filter, i didnt let them put a cheapo on it. the guys there put it on a lift for me and checked it out and let me look it over from the bottom and everything. very nice jiffy lube workers. all 4 of the guys working were lusting after it.

i only went to jiffy lube because i wanted to see if they would put it on a lift and let me see under it good. the 4 guys in their early 20s on a slow saturday were more than willing to check it all out. it seems to be a good little car.

I liked the S2000 you had a lot but I understand the whole trade value thing. Was anything wrong with the S2000 mechanically?

no mechanically it was solid. it did have a ripped top and some minor hail damage on the trunk lid from a storm that happened after i got it.

I know the Honda is a better car year for year. but trading a 04 with 74k for a 09 with 27k and under warranty is just too good of a deal to pass up.

the RX8 is the R3 model which is rare, and it does handle better at the limit than the s2000 did, and it rides a lot better. the S2000 was a little faster, however. Im really liking the RX8, honestly. its a much better car to drive than the internet would have you believe. im not saying its better than the S2000. they are both excellent in their own unique ways. the honda engine will no doubt out live the wankel, but i never keep my fun cars long enough to get 200k miles out of them anyway. this was me trading for immediate value rather than long term durability.

Call me Biased but i have done work on Rotarys and find them fascinating. A friend and I rebuilt his FC with a 13b and turbo II and i love the way those engines rev and sound. Oil can be an issue as the are known for consuming at least the 13b was known so keep an eye on your oil level. As far as your choice in oil following the reccomendations in your owners manual should do but you can also look on forums. My buddy ran mazda rotary oil forgot how he sourced it i think through carquest or an affiliate. They might sell it at your dealer too. There was this japanese idemitsu synthetic oil made for rotarys as i recall its been known to be great for 13b engines so renisis should be good to go as well.

All bias aside i also have had good experience with hondas and believe that your s2000 would have easily made it to 250k. The waranty and low mileage however leads me to believe you got the better end of the trade with th rx8. I have been lusting for an Rx8 ever since i saw it first in 03. Both great cars enjoy your renesis! remember to rev that bad boy to 8,000 once in awhile keep that engine clean

I have been premixig since day 1. 4oz of either Idemtsu or Amsol Saber Pro + 4oz of Dyson DSFM ea tank on the street. On the track I add 1oz/gal premix to fuel.

Congregation. I'm settling in Lowell around 8/1.
