Tractor 8.3 Cummins - used oil analysis

My first oil analysis with about 240 hours on my New Holland TG275 with the 8.3 Cummins. The brew was Delvac Extreme 15w-40 and 2qt of Lucas oil stabilizer. Out of a 5 gallon total capacity I am surprised that the viscosity increased by 2pts.

The soot level says 11, is that 11%, 1.1%, 0.11%?
After some searching I found this.

Understanding 11 UFM (Unsubtracted Fourier Transform Infrared)
  • The Estimated Percentage: In many standard heavy-duty applications a soot level of 11 UFM translates to roughly 0.1%) to (0.2%) soot by weight.
  • The Scale: UFM values for soot are whole numbers that generally scale much higher than percentages. For instance, many labs set a cautionary "warning" threshold for soot at 60 UFM, which roughly correlates to (1.0%) or (1.5%) soot by weight depending on the specific engine and oil calibration.

But….how many hours on the oil?

Don't use Lucas oil stabilizer; there's nothing wrong with the oil you bought, and a cheap VII isn't helping in a manner which you believe.

Thanks guys. The tractor has 3588 hours on it with 240 on the oil change. The reason why I added the Lucas is because of high temperatures while pulling a demanding planter. With high temperatures and non stop load for hours coolant temps will reach 200f sometimes. I’ve seen oil pressure variations of 3psi while the engine is run at 200f compared to 190f.

The Lucas does nothing for your engine. I'm literally sitting here in my work clothes having run a John Deere 8760 with a 10.1L engine for the last two days, 12 hours each day. It's pulling a 42' field cultivator and it works the engine hard, on the governor most of the time. No additives here and zero reason for them. Plus you have no idea of the quality of the base oil in the Lucas, but I'll bet you that you have polluted your HDEO with a lesser quality base oil from the Lucas.

200f is normal for a 275hp 8.3L at full load. 225f is getting high and 250f is bad. 3psi variance is more likely the gauge/sensor tolerance and unless all you have is 3psi...then that is a different issue.
