Occasionally I work on other people's cars doing oil changes, and fixing minor things. I had a lady bring her car over where I replaced the brakes. New rotors, pads, changed brake fluid, belt, filters. I get in to check my work and I got the ! yellow tire light.

She says, oh, it was on before I went and got new tires, and it is still on afterward. I scanned and found sensors 1,3, and 4 not reporting data...

Anyone think she should take it back to the tire place and ask what the deal is? She says she wasn't offered a TPMS rebuild or replace at the time they replaced her tires. 2015 Camry, 143,000 miles on it.

For every professional tire store, it is part of the job to reset the TPMS to the desired psi when installing new tires.

A nationally know tire retail store found all across the country that should know better than to throw 4 10 year old sensors back onto the car. Especially if the light was on in the first place. Now the tires have to come back off and new sensors put in. What a pain.

On second thought I am almost certain she will drive it like it is with the light on and not worry about it.

The TPMS sensors are well past their due date................
What kind of tire shop was this?

You could get a set of four Pacific branded sensors for $25. Pacific=Denso=OE. If she wants this fixed.

If your scanner lets you read these faults, will it let you write new ID numbers?

You can break one bead and sneak new sensors in without disturbing balance. And if you can't, it's a good service to offer.

Hmm not sure. My scanner is a Lemur Bluedriver with bluetooth to my phone. I can read, clear, etc. Never tried to rewrite anything yet. Do you think the Bluedriver can/will write to the computer?

I’ve never worked in a tire store, so I’m not sure if they’re flat rate or not. But in the tire guys defense, a mechanic usually gets paid about an hour to do tires. It’s of course the right thing to do to bring the attention to needing tpms diagnosis, especially with the light on while doing tires, but he may feel like the customer knows this already and just doesn’t care since it’s not reported as a complaint.

Getting an hour to do a set of four tires, he’s already barely making his time. Then to have to ask the service writer to ask the customer if they want diagnosis on the tpms system…it’s eating into any little bit of time he’s making.

Costco does not, and I would not, consider them unprofessional. What do you mean reset the TPMS to the desired PSI. What I'm saying is when Costco rotates or replaces tires, they do not reset TPMS. I'm actually not sure if our 2025 GM has sensors or if it relies upon ABS. Our 2011 had sensors that I reset on my own with a tool.

edit web says our 2025 does have sensors, so I assume it uses the same relearn tool

Those $25 eBay specials appear to be counterfeit Pacific sensors due to the silver (not black) caps on them. Also, if you scan the digital QR code printed on the back of those sensors, it does not go to the Pacific Industrial Co. site.

The Bluedriver module and app. cannot program or activate TPMS sensors.

Not having been a party to the conversation between the vehicle owner and the tire store I would probably stay out of the TPMS issue unless the owner asked me specifically for advice on the repair.

Average customer would most likely consider it an ''upsell'' if no TPMS light was on and decline.
OEM only for sensors, been down the cheapskate road on aftermarket sensors not lasting like OEM. Ya still have to pay for mounting so how much are you actually saving with less life on the aftermarket ones.

Discount Tires literally forgot to put sensors on new set of snows I got for BMW some 6yrs ago.
The worse is that they tried to convince me that it is module. BMW automatically recognizes sensors and everything was fine with summer set.
After that attempt I showed them sensors on the front seat where I left for them to install it.
You would think they would wonder about that when installing tire.

The discussion should be planned for, and had at reception/write up.
Most customers would consider it as a pushy upsale.
The most maddening sensor problem I encountered was due to an aftermarket radio - interfering with the signals.

The last time I was at Mavis, since my TPMS light was on, they did try to sell me on new sensors @ approx. $90.00 per tire. I think it is a great safety system and if it was my daughter's or wife vehicle, I would do it. Myself, I opted not to.
